Afghan Star DVD review

Pop music is decadence gone mainstream. Indulgence defined by the powers that be as acceptable. Ad content continues below Afghan Staris a pitch-perfect documentary. Afghan Staris not bland, ephemeral stuffing. This is controversy, the front-line of cultural progress and taboo testing. This is identity-building culture, a reason to live and a life-changing brand of entertainment. This is not music.Afghan Staris pop. Film: Afghan Staris out now andavailable from the Den Of Geek Store....

Mesrine Parts 1 & 2 DVD review

Indeed, his determined answer I rob banks. Public Enemy No.1fares better. Free from the whirlwind over-exposition and under-narration, the film relaxes back into Mesrines final feats. Scenes and characters are given room to breath, especially a tense, spot-on prison break sequence. No film can faithfully reproduce the complexity of a human life. Its just a ripping yarn, easily positioned for co-production financing and international acceptance. That aside, Richet and company play it quite boringly safe....

The Firm DVD review

Nick Love’s fresh take on The Firm arrives on DVD. And you know what? It feels good to be proved wrong once in a while. His first film,Goodbye Charlie Bright, was a decent debut that showed a promising young director. Just that his films are seemingly aimed at the Zoo / Nuts crowd. Thats the scene that I left Blackpool to escape. As well as football hooliganism, the film also touched on the politics of Thatchers Britain....

The Soloist iPod download review

Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx star in a solid, if unspectacular movie. Anthony tries it out on his iPod… Foxx convincingly captures the mans mannerisms and his unpredictable state of mind. Foxx is convincing but not that interesting, as Ayers is largely drawn as a two-dimensional nutcase. That possibly sounds overly negative, because its not a bad film. Its just not as good as you might expect. The Soloistis available from the iTunes store....

Solomon Kane: James Purefoy interview

It’s Mr James Purefoy… What attracted you to the project? Lot and lots of things! Hes a terse man that doesnt give away too much about himself. He expresses himself through actions rather than words. And I liked the fact that the film was British. We dont really have enough of these films. I feel that we could be making more of this key in of film. Were you familiar with the character?...

Solomon Kane review

I… oh, dear god, Im not sure I can say it out loud, I… I loveHawk The Slayer. Not just Hawk, though, butKrull,DragonslayerandClash Of The Titanstoo. As forBeastmaster, well, that didnt age quite so well, but I still love it. Heres hoping thisKaneis a success so we can see a grander visualisation if the planned trilogy goes ahead. I said FIRE SWORD. Oh, and I couldve done without the ham fisted, religious iconography too....

Alternate Cover: Secret Avengers guesses

James works through the teaser images from Secret Avengers, and does a bit of guesswork… However, there are suggestions that this might not be Hank McCoy. Teaser 2: Moon Knight Again, not a hard conclusion to reach. Teaser 3: Valkyrie This is where it gets a little difficult. There are very few caped female characters in Marvels canon. That leaves Thor Girl, a very obscure character, and not one whos especially secret, and Valkyrie....

Pontypool Blu-ray review

You don’t need a big budget to generate real atmosphere and tension. In Pontypool, on Valentines Day, there will be no happy ending. That said, this isnt a bad thing! For those willing to give it a go, its definitely worth watching, and immensely haunting. The Disc Pontypool: The Radio Drama is possibly the most interesting photo gallery Ive ever seen! In places, its even more effective than the film....

Up Blu-ray review

AndUpis certainly, at its peak, a brilliant film. Could it have worked in live action? But on second and third viewings, I realised Id got this one wrong. Hes a terrific, not-always-entirely-likeable character, made all the better by not always being an easy one. And the film around him fits together exceptionally well. Because warts and all,Upis some piece of work. On the evidence here, theyre some way away from catching them up....

Shutter Island review

Martin Scorsese reunites with Leonard DiCaprio for the film of Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island. But is it any good? Here’s our spoiler-free review… Lets face it, cinematic realism is a red herring. It is a flickering lie, and it fills our eyes with illusion and magic. At its most immediate,Shutter Islandis a spot-on exercise in tension and mystery. Stylistically, the film mirrors this, pitching between the posts of the Gothic and the Surreal....

Ponyo (dubbed) review

Hayao Miyazaki’s latest, Ponyo, finally arrives in the UK. Has it kept the Studio Ghibli flag flying high? Hayao Miyazaki is a bloody wizard. A conjurer of animated dreams with line and colour as his wand and magic. A popular auteur in a form that has few. He lives a lonely life until he finds Ponyo, the magical fish-turned-girl. It all feels very over-worked, and helps to drown out the films simpler pleasures....

Hotel Dash PC review

Trouble is, the intended venue is a bit of a dump and Quinn is understandably panicking. This is where Flo comes in. Shell help get the hotel back on its feet whilst earning enough money to refurbish it. The gameplay is essentially the same as otherDashtitles. You point and click to make Flo do what she needs to do… and as quickly as possible! This continues through ten levels in one location, then youll move onto the next....

Being Human: The Road book review

The first in a series of Being Human novels turns out to be really very good… The Roadis the first of theBeing Humannovels, published in paperback by BBC books. Why they didnt follow the hardbook examples of theDoctor WhoandTorchwoodnovels is a mystery. The book feels rather short, at 252 pages. Obviously, this isnt Guerriers fault (I hope) and more down to the publisher! I like the idea of the books leading into each other and hope that this is a recurring theme....
