Reno 911!: Season One DVD review

The TV series that spawned a movie comes to DVD. Our first-time viewer, Mark, takes a look… Reno911!uses both improvised materials and the mockumentary format to bring glimpses of the Reno Sheriffs Department. Think of it like a mickey-take ofCOPSand youre on solid ground. The answer is something of a mixed bag. So, we have the horny female whos happy to show her cleavage at any opportunity. We have the outrageously gay guy, complete with his camp-as-Christmas walk and handlebar moustache....

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Blu-ray review

It has since found an audience and achieved status as a cult classic. Depp is fantastic as Raoul Duke / Hunter S Thompson. However, Gilliam came to the project fairly late in the day. As a result, its one of the finest book to movie adaptations released to date. The Disc There are a couple of extras available. Basically, the same as what was on the first Region 1 DVD edition that I owned....

9 Blu-ray review

One of the many interesting animated features of 2009, Dave checks out Shane Acker’s 9 on Blu-ray… 9has a fantastic voice cast, really interesting characters and exceptionally accomplished CGI. The film is genuinely creepy in places, reminiscent ofCoraline. Theres also aTerminatororMatrixelement to the machines taking over mankind, with nods to technology seen in those films. Some of the creations are sinister, especially the robotic snake with the baby doll head!...

Being Human: Chasers book review

George wonders, for example, whether or not lycanthropy is hereditary. George is an odd choice because the story of his baby blues is very much the b-plot here. Leo aside, Michalowskis own characters suffer from being thin parodies. Spin-off media is a particular niche that is easily done wrong. For fans of Mitchell, George and Annie, this one comes highly recommended. Rating: 4 out of 5

Heavy Rain PlayStation 3 review

Heavy Rain, one of the PS3s most anticipated titles is here. Aaron brings us a spoiler-free look at the Fahrenheit follow-up… It takes a bold developer to try and do something a little different. Often these endeavours to push the envelope fall upon stony ground, with few appreciating the risks taken. Sometimes, however, these attempts succeed, even if they often polarise the masses. Games like SegasShenmueand classic Cyan adventure seriesMystare prime examples....

Life On Mars (US) DVD review

The US version of Life On Mars arrives on DVD in the UK. Will he cope with his new boss Lieutenant Gene Hunt? Will the sympathetic Annie believe his fantastic future tales? Sounds like a tall order. Tatsunoko Vs Capcom Nintendo Wii review

Capcom takes the characters of Tansunoko and pits them in a fight with some of its own. And it works really rather well… This is reflected in the relative obscurity of the Tatsunoko roster. Still, theyre an eclectic and esoteric bunch who mesh well with the more familiar crew of Capcom misfits. Its also instantly more accessible than other recent entries into the genre. Button mashing will get you surprisingly far, and its often possible to do something completely amazing by accident....

The Unloved review

Samantha Morton’s directorial debut gets a limited cinema release. Michael checks out The Unloved… Lucys experience is narrated closely, with a subjective sense of perspective. Morton capably gives the film a poetic grace, with direction that harmonises perfectly with the intended effect. However, such a weighty, stark film runs the risk of becoming wearisome, or somewhat soporific. Rating: 3 out of 5

Crazy Heart review

Rightly so, as Bridges commands the film, creating a character that is fully formed and believable. Unfortunately, the film lacks the power to support such a career highlight performance. That is until bonny single mum and journalist Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal) comes into the equation. The film glides by with an unassuming pace, with flashes of tenderness, humour and heartbreak. Crazy Heart is playing now in London, and gets a wide UK release on March 5th....

Doctor Who The Writer’s Tale: Benjamin Cook interview

Youll find a link to the review at the bottom. As part of the promotion for the book, we got to fire some questions at co-author Benjamin Cook. The correspondence was supposed to last a few weeks. A couple of months tops. Two-and-a-half years later, we were still e-mailing! You know how it is. Wed exceeded any likely word-count by forty-fold. If my laptop had crashed five-and-half months in, wed have been fucked....
