Beyond The Pole review

The idea to base what is otherwise a Brit-Bromance comedy around an Arctic expedition is a good one. A lot ofBeyond The Poles charm comes from its cheeky, rambunctious tone. It is full of energy, wholly unpretentious and without cynicism. Rating: 4 out of 5

Bioshock 2 PlayStation 3 review

When asked, Would you kindly review Bioshock 2? Its got hard times ahead, make no mistake. Visually, the game is still great, and controls are very similar. However, its not long before you meet the games major new foe, the Big Sisters. These are fast, agile foes that make Big Daddies look like pussycats. In particular, the control system has been tweaked. ThePipe Mania-style hacking mini-game is no more, replaced by a little reflex testing game....

City Girl Blu-ray review

What happens when you take a 1930 movie and put it on Blu-ray? Luke has been checking out City Girl to find out… City Girl, then, seems the forgotten child of Murnaus oeuvre. A romantic drama in essence, with occasional moments of comedy thrown in. Yet, in Murnaus hands they feel real and sincere. They make the heart jump rather than the eyes roll. Sunrisenabs the plaudits, butCity Girldeserves just as many, perhaps even more so....

Assassin’s Creed II review

Considering the problems with the first game, I was, admittedly, a little dubious about this on. Ad content continues below Even the NPCs within the game all look different. Gone too are the ridiculous treks between locations on horseback. A nice touch to this game is the notoriety mete. ), killing a snitch whos running around the town, or bribing the town criers in the area. It makes the choices in the game you make much more important....

Top 10 ridiculous costumes in videogames

you’re free to’t beat a dodgy videogame outfit. Here are ten that the cosplay community has mostly steered clear of… Sure, hes a whiny priss, but who isnt nowadays? Theres an Assassin on the loose! Yeah, thats him there. The one whose mum clearly uses Daz. Dante: Dantes Inferno Thats some useful armour you have there, Dante. Your shoulders and head are well protected, but, whats this? Youve taken off all of the armour that should protect your vital organs and replaced it with some tapestry?...

Adventureland DVD review

One of 2009s most underappreciated films arrives on DVD. And Adventureland surely deserves to find a bigger audience… It might sound a bit drippy of me, but my favourite moment ofAdventurelandis probably a small one. Im still chuckling about that now. Actually, to be fair, lots ofAdventurelandhas stuck in my head. Thats where he meets Joel, who in most movies would be a throwaway, two-dimensional character. But you dont find those inAdventureland....

Doctor Who: The Masque Of Mandragora DVD review

There is political intrigue as Frederico attempts to wrest the dukedom from its rightful heir Giuliano. At the height of a masquerade, the Demnos cult attacks the court. The ambience of the village adds an authenticity to the tale. It would become a popular stand-in for Italy over time, being used a few years later inCitizen Smith. A young Tim Pigott-Smith puts in a faultless performance in a story heavy on dialogue and Machiavellian political intrigue....

The Day Of The Triffids DVD review

The BBC’s recent fresh take on The Day Of The Triffids turns up on DVD. So what does Matt make of it? I, for one, welcome this. In this adaptation, this is reconciled partly by dividing the two crises between the two episodes. The effect of splitting Wyndhams ungainly double-concept plot in this way is highly satisfactory. I was impressed by this adaptation and surprised by the negative reactions on Amazon....

Vanishing Of The Bees DVD review

Well, we think he did. Nobody can actually find where he said it. But it doesnt look great. No bees, no pollination, no crops, no food…doh! In one case, it was enough to turn his acres of land into a surreal graveyard. It almost defies belief. There are nasty mites which are getting into hives and feeding off the unhatched larvae in the honeycombs. I learnt so much from this film that it was almost an honour to be able to see it....

Linda Hamilton Interview: Holy Water, Terminator, Beauty And The Beast & kissing Duncan

Here’s what happened… Its amazing how much of our lives we spend planning. Meeting Linda Hamilton, however, happened to be such an occurrence. First things first: Linda Hamilton is amazing. I wont be offended. So, the interview that followed was less formal than usual, but, hopefully, no less insightful. All I can say is that if you get a chance to meet her, do it. Linda Hamilton:Here we are! And how are you doing?...

Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief review

Just delete the required names as you go along, depending on which film you want to know about… Here goes… Director Chris Columbus knows how to set himself a challenge. And what a bewildering one it is. Hermione/Annabeth is both clever and feisty, and theres an underdeveloped undercurrent of attraction between them. Hes also served by some genuinely excellent production design, and scenes that positively swim with extras. Whatever you think ofHarry Potter/Percy Jackson, its often brilliant to look at....

Hollywood Hellraisers book review

HisCult TVbook is also essential reading for anyone interested in the classic ITC series. And ifHellraisersleft you cold, thenHollywood Hellraiserswill not make you a convert. Within these chapters he takes turns to deal with each of his subjects private lives during that period. The anecdotal nature of this work is its biggest strength and also its biggest weakness. Everyone loves a good story about a forgotten weekend or a crazy drunken stunt....

It’s Only A Movie by Mark Kermode book review

Its not the easiest sell, the autobiography of a film critic. Perhaps the picture of a man clutching popcorn and a chainsaw should give that away, though. Instead, what you get is pretty much the written movie version of Mark Kermodes life. Whats more, its a set-up that works far better than it should. The same love of Julian Sands, too. But if you do, thenIts Only A Movieis a treat....
