Heroes: Original Score CD review

ButHeroescomposer/performers Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman try their best not to stand out. Take the title track in the tradition ofLost, it lasts all of ten seconds. Its more a brief sequence of sounds than a tune. Claires suite begins with vibrato notes then segues into a wistful piano melody, symbolizing lost innocence. Haunting voices call to us perhaps the ghosts of the deaths that Claire cheats thanks to her superpower....

Last House On The Left review

If you might stand the original 1972 Wes Craven outing, you might stand Dennis Iliadiss extraordinarily faithful remake. In fact, the film is extremely well-made, with excellent script, cinematography and pacing. The characters generate empathy and the villains are shockingly credible too. The 1972 film was hard-edged trash-exploitation made by a film-maker of commendable talent and potential. This version can only sit as an above-average example among the several hundred derivative movies that Cravens shocker spawned....

Red Faction: Guerrilla Xbox 360 review

The revival of the Red Faction franchise proves something of a triumph, as Aaron discovers in his review… Now go blow shit up! Never let it be said that developer, Volition, doesnt know how to have fun. I could elaborate on the story here, but in truth, its not really that great. ), carve up vehicles and make short work of any foes stupid enough to get close to you....

Synecdoche, New York review

Charlie Kaufman gave us Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine and Adaptation. Yet that is whats accomplished with the entire of Suh-neck-doh-kee. Philip K. Dick at open-mic night. Top of the list is that nothing makes sense in Cadens world. At times it comes across as though someone decided to swede a cloverfield version of H.G. WellsThe Time Machinewhile they were supposed to be filming a season finale forDesperate Housewives. A game cast adds to the impression that the audience has stumbled onto a grown-up version ofSesame Street....

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Blu-ray review

Brad Pitt and David Fincher reunite for Benjamin Button. We review the brand new two-disc Blu-ray release… Fortunately, Ive got a comfy sofa. I should state quickly that I quite liked the film. We see him dealing with the fact that hes getting younger. And we follow his romances, too. What ultimately surprised me, though, is that the film didnt have that much to say. But its still a surprisingly slight, if superbly made film....

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Xbox 360 review

Aaron embarks on a mission to save humanity in the latest Star Ocean tale… UnlikeFFXIIs half-baked manual combat andUndiscoverys clunky system, here combat is fast, fluid and very, very enjoyable. You have full control over Edge and his allies, and the whole system hangs together very well. A hugely important and impressive feature is your allies AI, which is spot on. A major addition to the battle mechanic lies with the games blindside system....

Fermat’s Room review

Could this quizzical thriller be a little more than a Saw retread…? Having said that, it remains a tense and intelligent if claustrophobic thriller. The puzzle-inside-a-puzzle structure depicts four people in a race against time to save themselves. I spoil nothing by revealing the main plot, since you could actually see it on the film poster! You might already smell a rat, but it seems the average challenge-embracing mathematic genius cannot....

The Sims 3 PC review

The Sims returns for their long-awaited third installment. Its only happened twice and the first time no one really knew what to expect. Scrub the shower, be late for work, clean up cat urine?! Whod want to do that and call it fun? Theyll be a lot more limited, but in the spirit of the game. Were back where we started again right, expansion pack-free and waiting? In essence, yes....

Interview: Roger Nygard on Trekkies, Trekkies 2 and The Nature Of Existence

And I havent stopped making films since. And what are your memories of one of your earliest projects, directingAmerican Yakuza 2? That was a fun day. The special effects guys used mothballs which it turns out are highly explosive to destroy the Bobcat dummy. Your breakthrough film was the documentaryTrekkies. Where did the idea for that come about? Denise Crosby came up with it. I couldnt believe nobody had done it yet, it seemed so obvious....

The Best Of Simon And Kirby review

Two of the founding fathers of supehero comics get a new collection… Siegel and Schuster have been credited with the birth of superheroes with the creation ofSuperman. Their names Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. This first volume of rare reprints celebrates the diversity of their pioneering work from 1940s to 60s. More intriguing is theirStuntmanstrip with its striking double-page spreads, an innovation that came to define their style. War adventures are prominent too, inspired, no doubt, by the creators own experiences....

The Wrestler DVD review

Hence, one copy ofMilkis heading my way. The Wrestler, however, is some beast. Behind the camera, Darren Aronofsky delivers arguably his most accessible film to date, too. Ill be finding out in a few days time. But still, there is material worth spinning here. All the key players duly turn up to add their piece, and its genuinely an interesting piece. The interview with Mickey Rourke that forms the second extra feature is a bit weak....

100 movie clichés that just won’t die…

But here are 100 cliches that tend to get relied on over and over again… 1. Cars are never locked, and contain the keys needed to start them. An aircraft will fall from the sky if left unattended for 10 seconds. Ad content continues below 4. A moving vehicle can only be stopped either with a rocket launcher or goods train. Women can run in whatever footwear theyre got on....

Pixar’s Up review

On the surface,Upis the companys least marketing-friendly release to date. The star is a curmudgeonly old man, after all. Carl (Edward Asner) is a 78-year-old man. The house hes lived in his entire life is standing in the way of progress. Developers want to get rid of Carl, but Carl has a dream. He made a promise to his wife that one day they would explore South America. As it turns out, flying his house to South America is the easiest part of Carls journey....
