Down Terrace DVD review

In fact, its possibly a contender for one of the worst. I found this quite refreshing, as at no point does it glorify their lifestyle. Instead, it makes it seem like one of the most depressing existences imaginable. None of the humour is telegraphed or overtly played for laughs. Its all done fairly subtlety and comes from the exchanges between the characters. Its all about believable, well developed characters. This film is a remarkable achievement that comes highly recommended....

The 10 greatest low budget sci-fi movies

Ideally, science fiction films require large quantities of cash. Truckloads of the stuff. Just look at the most famous examples of the genre:Metropolis,Blade Runner,2001: A Space Odyssey. In 1974, however, he directed his one and only big screen feature,Phase IV. Barely released in US cinemas and allowed to quietly languish in obscurity on DVD,Cypheris well worth rediscovering. (By contrast,Videodrome, Cronenbergs more expensive next film, only made $2 million.) Scannersis hardly Cronenbergs most mature work, but its nevertheless an unforgettable one....

The Dinner Party DVD review

As such, it is a farewell party. If this is such a poignant moment for the couple, why arent their friends close to them? Do they have an ethical disagreement, perhaps? Do they have any close friends at all? And if there is a disagreement, why is nobody trying to intervene? Why does no-one, at any point, ask Why? Is this really a suicide pact or is there something more macabre going on?...

World Cinema: Lost in translation?

It is an argument against film which absolutely infuriates me. Someone wont watch a film because the act of reading is too much for them? Its the height of laziness. Does reading put someone off a book, or looking at the bloody Internet? (The Girl Who Played With Fire,Im looking at you!) Ad content continues below However, there is a flipside to this. For those who enjoy watching films with subtitles, do we forgive them too much?...

CLiNT issue 1 review

Ad content continues below Alan Moore has started his own eclectic brew of musings in Dodgem Logic. CLiNT, on the other hand, is heavy on comic material, interspersed with fun features and interviews. Not the easiest combinations. And so, what has been squeezed in between the cover sportingKick-Assand with stand-up comedian Frankie Boyle? I know, I know, a team-up you never expected to appear, but all will become clear. Vampires and gangsters collide with other major contributor, Jonathan Ross....

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep PSP review

Instead, the story revolves around three new main characters, Ventus, Terra and Aqua. If youve played the previousKingdom Heartsgames then this will all be familiar, and youll know what to expect. Theres also a multiplayer component included. I can happily say thatBirth By Sleepis every bit as good as the previous outings. This allows players to customise their character ability layout, choosing which abilities and items they can use. Its similar to previous games, but is a little more in-depth this time....

Music in the movies: the sci-fi themes of Jerry Goldsmith

This is underpinned by a sense of dread of the inhabitants seemingly inevitable fate. The score is grander and more cinematic than the film it accompanies, elevating the film as a result. Its hard to argue with the end results, as Goldsmiths score is quite astonishing. Goldsmiths original version wasnt used in the film, but is available now in a deluxe edition. The score features some startlingly original and inventive percussion that gives the film its heartbeat....

Paul Andrew Williams interview: Cherry Tree Lane, British youth culture and the Alien boxset

The villains here are complex, flawed and dangerously realised. Hardly surprising, coming from the man who brought us the searing, shocking and soberingLondon To Brighton. Was Peckinpahs film an influence or inspiration for you as a filmmaker? Ad content continues below Annoying as it might seem, I havent seen that film. What interests you most about exploring this? Mainly because so many things have been developed in the last two decades that everything is instant and available....

The Scouting Book For Boys DVD review

Neither of these teenagers is concerned with the distant future. Emily is impulsive and troublesome, whilst David is easily lead, despite being more considered in his actions. Jack Thorne (ofShamelessandSkinsfame) has turned in a fantastic script, bristling with realism. When her life is threatened, its impossible not to hold your breath as she pleads for help. The cinematography reveals the beauty of Norfolk, from the coastline to the lush greenery that surrounds the area....

Lost Season 6 Blu-ray review

The divisive final season of Lost arrives on disc. And James has been pouring through the Blu-ray… When the pilot episode ofLostfirst aired, there were people who claimed wed never make it to this point. Meanwhile, the supporters maintained thatLostwould reach its natural and planned conclusion, delivering a creatively satisfying ending. As it turned out, we were all right. They simply become all the more frustratingly irrelevant. Luckily, the on-island action does gain a bit of additional traction the second time around....

We Sing Encore Nintendo Wii review

Indeed, truly talented people should stay away because, frankly, theyre no fun. This last feature is welcome, because compatibility could have so easily been limited to some expensive proprietary equipment. There are some singing lessons in the Solo part of the game, but they didnt seem terribly good. This isnt a particularly important, though, and overallWe Sing Encoreprovides a pretty good singing experience. We Sing Encoreis out now andavailable from the Den Of Geek Store....

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Blu-ray review

So, its not like they didnt have a go at put some genuine ethnicity in there. I didnt catch any obvious artefacts, and the colour in some of the CGI cityscapes is just wonderful. In terms of extras, this isnt a feature-heavy offering, but its not just a movie exclusively either. This didnt work on my PC Blu-ray software, but did on my PS3. And its something to watch while were waiting for the fourthPiratesmovie, from the same stable....

I’m Still Here review

The long-awaited documentary following Joaquin Phoenix and his decision to quit acting to become a hip hop artist arrives. But is I’m Still Here actually any good? rang out louder and louder. The film begins with a playful poke at the viewer. Now, he says, turning to face the audience, well see the real man. The moment is a complete non-sequitur and occurs in a location and costume that the film never revisits....
