Simon reckons Steve Martin remains one of the funniest men on the planet.

Thus, Ive put together a list of my favourites of his films.

And it also demonstrated Martins ability to pitch a performance precisely.

And theres been nothing quite like it since.

9Roxanne

Possibly the best, wittiest and cleverest screenplay Martin has written to date.

Cue Bale writing his thoughts down, which he allows Chris to use.

Just your average everyday romance.

Things I love aboutRoxanne, then.

Firstly, I think its really well directed.

Its tenderly handled, marvellously played, and also very, very funny.

If you like your Martin movies that bit more serious, then its also incidentally worth givingShopgirla try.

6Planes, Trains & Automobiles

A majestic double act forms the heart of the late John Hughes brilliant comedy.

But its the wonderful double act, and one of Hughes best scripts, that generates the gold.

A quite brilliant comedy.

), and Martin at the head of things eating up scenes like a pro.

Parenthoodis brilliantly written, exceptionally funny, and doesnt seem to have aged a day.

Its got a hell of a lot to live up to.

And the film offers an avalanche of outstanding, and utterly hilarious.

Pulling a small church?

Finding his special purpose?

Navin finding his name in the phone book?

I could go on.

It is a bit daft.

It isnt quite as good when Navin makes it big.

As Martin has pointed out just this year, comedy isnt really a critics medium.
