Well, theres a bunch of styles that went into makingRepo.
I love propaganda posters.
If you look a lot at the posters that we have out right now, theyre very propaganda-based.
Does the film contain political comment on the right-wing feeling and commercialism thats in the culture now?
Yeah, one hundred percent.
TheSawfilms were violent and they were horrific but they had a message to them appreciate your life.
This is more making a statement on society as a whole now.
Plastic surgery and enhancing your body has become a thing thats just taken over.
No-one wants to look like a slob.
I think that people are afraid to be themselves anymore.
The whole movie is about that, about genetic enhancement.
I think thats the next stage.
If we can get our lips to look fuller, we do it.
But what happens at the next step?
Thats what the whole movies about, that fascination that we have to sculpt our bodies and become perfect.
It has the potential to be a very gory film is that something that you held back on?
Very much, yes.
As a genre, its more sci-fi than anything.
This is not it at all.
Thats a very small part of the movie, which at its core is a sci-fi drama.
That said, I dont hold back on the blood and violence, but its more comical than anything.
Its not to be taken seriously.
Yeah, its fun.
I think that in my next life I would like to be a rock star.
You go on treadmills and you work out, and what do we do?
We listen to our iPod, to music.
And at the weekends, people go see movies, they sit home and watch DVDs.
As a kid growing up, musicals spoke to me, because I loved music and I loved movies.
But thats one of the things that I was cautious about.
This is such a weird genre to ask people to buy into a horror rock opera.
DoesSweeney Todds success encourage you for the prospects forRepo?
I think of the movie in the same way.
I think that these jot down of movies are going to make a come-back.
It was a circus on set every day, but in the best possible way.
So they have a sing-off, and it was so surreal.
What was more surreal was how much of a family we became.
But I could not have been further from the truth.
Everyone hung out in the same restaurants in the same hotel.
By the time we were on set, we like this family, so it was crazy.
It was really easy too.
And Sarah Brightman I mean itsSarah Brightman, the worlds biggest-selling soprano!
It took just one phone call I called her up and said I want you in this movie.
I didnt think there was a chance in hell she would do it, but I had to ask.
It seems a bit of a departure for him.
Its funny, thats really what I thought too.
I wanted to be what the fuck about it pardon my French.
I wanted people to look at the cast and say what the fuck!.
He has an amazing operatic voice.
It was a no-brainer for Paul.
A project this off-beat and hard to categorise must be almost impossible to fund in Hollywood.
Were theSawfilms strictly a means to an end in realisingRepo?
Yeah, it was.
TheSawfilms were a cakewalk compared to this.
Every studio in the world freaked out, saying theres no way were gonna make this.
ButRepoto me is a very personal project.
Its my passion project.
Im sick of seeing the same movies.
Im sick of seeing cookie-cutter, manufactured movies.
I wanted to do something completely different something that hadnt been done, so people wouldnt or couldnt compare.
Theres nothing you might compareRepoto.
When you see the movie, youll know what Im talking about, Its hard to find a comparison.
But right now were being shoved the same studio crap time and time and time again.
Theres kind of like a rebellion on my part as well.
I mean, three sequels back to back to back.
Whats the remake that youre doing?
Im doing something for Dimension right now, for Weinstein.
Im supposed to start pre-production onScanners, which is a remake of a David Cronenberg film.
But this is not a movie that youll know if its successful right after its released.
Rocky Horroris the perfect example.Rocky Horror Picture Showdid not become an overnight success.
It was only in the midnight screenings and all of this thatRocky Horror Picture Showfound its audience.
Anytime you ask an audience to embrace something different, I think the immediate reaction is its bad.
It wasnt until ten years later that people were like Wow!
Heres what my personal philosophy of what my goal is from this point forward.
My idea is to play in those parks.
Things that arent safe.
Do you have any more musicals in you?
Basically, they thought it was the apocalypse, and this company figured out how to save humanity.
When you see the movie, youll know what I mean.
We had an amazing production designer, whos directingSaw 5right now.
Its a world that I want to go back to and play around in.
Its hard to tell.
Theres a common misconception with these movies, which is that they just started withSawand all of this.
Theyve been around forever.
I would love to take credit and say that the splat-pack started this movement.
We just reinvigorated it its always been there.
Back in the late sixties and early seventies, there are all these movies on torture and dismemberment.
It was a horrific movie.
I think it was in the late sixties, it was James Caans first movie.
I think what happens is that you just find there are rises and falls in the sub-genres of horror.
Maybe its the horror musical [laughs].
When we come back to torture porn again, we will take it to the next level.
It will be more gruesome and more violent, pushing the envelope even further.
Is there a moral issue there?
Is there a point at which we should say that the lines far enough ahead?
Film-makers, I think, are going to keep re-defining where the line really is.
So I think that the line keeps moving on what we can and cant get away with.
Anytime I see anything like that, its horrific to me, horrific.
I think youre going to see a lot more of that.
Or was he meaning that?
Never say never, but I have nothing left to say withSaw.
I dont know whats left to tell with it.
But right now I can say that Im done with it.
Thank you Darren Lynn Bousman.
