Dogma

Kevin Smiths fourth film in some ways remains his most ambitious.

Alan Rickman’s best acting roles

It works though; he comes in, does his work, makes an impression, and moves on.

Smiths push to cast him was richly rewarded.

As it stands, he didnt, nor was he ever recoginized by the Academy with a single nod.

InAng Lees version ofSense and Sensibilityadapted by and starringEmma ThompsonAlan Rickman gets to play Col. Brandon.

And what a performance of measured restraint Rickman delivers.

A lovely film too, with a brilliant score.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

The very best actors have range.

Theyre not confined to just one kind of role.

And furthermore, theyre not afraid to take on a musical thatTim Burtonhappens to be making.

Turpin is the man basically responsible for ruining Todds life, a role that Rickman does manage to deepen.

Love Actually

Ah, a Richard Curtis film on Den Of Geek.

That should cheer everyone up.

Especially if we slip in that wequite likedAbout Time.

Thats an argument for another time though.

Rickmans is the least sympathetic, and he doesnt pretend to be otherwise.

Its no easy feat this, as Snape isnt a straight villain role by any measure.

He does, of course, and he makes for a damn fine action figure too.

Where they encounter real aliens.

But this is Alan Rickman were talking about, and well forever be grateful for his casting here.

But the films consistently elevated by Rickmans supporting turn as Sinn Fein President Eamon de Valera in the film.

Its a demanding role, without too much screen time to put a complex character across.

He comes off as a weak man on screen, one with motives that arent always clear.

Liam Neeson would, with some justification, get the lions share of the acting plaudits whereMichael Collinsis concerned.

But Rickman deserves his fair share of applause.

The film simply wouldnt work as well without him.

Die Hard

Bill Clay.

You know the moment.

Because straight away, you fear for McClane, so cunning and brilliant is his opponent.

Which neatly leads us on to…

Its the reason why his Sheriff rated just higher than the mighty Hans Gruber in this list.

The tone of his delivery is absolute perfection.

That always leaves us quite uncomfortable, and with good reason.

But its Rickmans film.

It may as well just be calledRickman: Prince of Thieves.

Truly, Madly, Deeply

Reckon Alan Rickman is a great supporting actor?

Reckon hes a terrific villain?

Were on board with that too.

But their dream of a life together is tragically cut short when Jamie suddenly dies.

What makes it all the more special is that it keeps some ambiguity to it all.

Is Nina seeing just what she wants to see or is the ghost of Jamie really before her?

In a career packed with must-see performances, this one remains arguably Alan Rickmans best.
