The Last Jedi,at long last, has the answer.
Admiral Ackbar, hero of the Battle of Endor inReturn Of The Jedi,is killed off without fanfare.
But as Kylo Ren says, You have to break with the past.
The saga has to evolve even if it means breaking a few things along the way.
For the most part, the set-pieces Johnson puts in their place feel fresh and exciting.
Kylo Ren is, once again, an arresting and intimidating character: conflicted, unpredictable, darkly funny.
In the case of familiar faces from Star Wars past, theyre often given short shrift.
Even a hero like Luke isnt immune from dark thoughts, even if the intentions behind them are noble.
This shades of grey theme also feeds into the idea of breaking with the past.
All of which brings us to one of the most hotly-debated topics inStar Warshistory to date: Reys family.
Is Rey a Skywalker?
As it turns out, none of the above.
Possibly, but its also a fascinating new development.
God forbid, Jar Jar Binks?
Again, none of the above.
Was he, like Reys parentage mystery, just another red herring?
If so, The Last Jedi fails to introduce a particularly menacing threat to replace him.
That just leaves us with General Hux, whos now firmly established as an utter goon.
InThe Last Jedi,Johnson undercuts Huxs last shred of authority in the opening scene.
(The style of humor introduced byThe Last Jedicould fill an entire 2,000 word article by itself.)
Johnson has shattered old icons, but hasnt found anything particularly iconic to put in their place.
Its telling that one ofThe Last Jedis stand-out scenes openly explores the subject of nothingness.
HowEpisode IXwill catch it, and move the story on from here, is anybodys guess.
