Most importantly, the film answered our questions about what the future ofStar Warswould look like.
There aremany big questionsfans had by the end of the film that will undoubtedly be explored in its sequels.
But first, let me just reiterate thatBIG SPOILERSare ahead.
By the end ofTFA, we have some clues.
But the quest for Luke Skywalker inTFAis like the Death Star plans in the originalStar Wars.
But in searching for the MacGuffin, the characters discover their true potential and become the real saviors.
Still, finding Luke in the end is significant due in big part to where hes been hiding.
The implications of this are massive.
Luke has failed to establish a new Jedi Order, thwarted by Ben Solos fall to the Dark Side.
But could he be searching for something more?
After all, weve seen what simply touching a historic lightsaber can do to someone who is Force-sensitive.
Places of infinite richesor Force energy.
Rey joining Luke in this mythical place at the end of the movie is of great importance.
Arthur eventually creates the Knights of the Round Table, who accompany him on many adventures.
If Luke is the Merlin, then Rey is the young Arthur of this story.
Its certainly no accident that Reys powers manifest for the first time when she finds Anakins lightsaber.
Before the scene in Maz Kanatas castle, she never displays any kind of Force sensitivity.
(Actually, she Force pulls the lightsaber out of the snow before Kylo can do the same.
Again, the Arthurian imagery cannot be ignored.)
And most importantly, she hears the voices of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.
Whether she hears them as part of the vision or some kind of communication from the Beyond is unclear.
And indeed finding the lightsaberisher first step.
Maz tells Rey that the lightsaber calls to her and that she must take the weapon.
Surely, Kylo knew of its existence.
Might have Luke thought at one point that Ben Solo was the Jedi destined to continue his work?
Among the things Luke probably acquired in the thirty years betweenVIandVIIwas his fathers Jedi lightsaber.
We know Luke has foresight and is prone to visions of the future.
All the way back inThe Empire Strikes Back, Luke can see his friends suffering on Cloud City.
And even before that, Anakin has visions of Padme dying in childbirth and his mother suffering on Tatooine.
Of course, his visions must have been more corrupting.
Because its so obvious that there must be a successor.
Luke even leaves behind a map to his hideout for when the time comes!
Words spoken by Obi-Wan Kenobi keep echoing in my head.
to find him in the one place where they might push back the darkness.
Where she can the pick up the pieces of the Jedi Order.
The sequel will have to establish how Reys quest directly connects to Lukes exile.
Shes set to be the first in a new generation of Jedi, and well see her embrace that.
And if Luke is indeed her father, there are plenty of questions to be answered there.
It will be up to Rey to make the choicean option she was not given inThe Force Awakens.
By the end ofEpisode VIII, well see her take up Lukes quest to restore the Jedi.
