Can Rio find a distinction in the increasingly crowded animated family movie market?

Theres the reluctant couple.

A bit of music.

It blends together decently enough, but theres little threat to the movies mentioned just a paragraph back.

The story sort of mirrorsRangovery early on, but not for long.

Its one of those survival of the species things.

And you have to say right here that some of the animation work is simply exquisite.

Technically, its a hard film to fault.

But then, in come the rent-a-story elements again.

But will he be able to learn?

That aside,Riohas one or two things in its favour.

Firstly, its quite witty, and its gag hit rate really isnt bad.

Its also got some smart voice casting, primarily Jesse Eisenberg as Blu and Jemaine Clement as Nigel.

Its simply a means to an end.

And thats, really, the best way to approachRio.

But by consequence of its choices, its a hard film to really like that much, either.

Lionel Richie comes out of it well, mind.
