Michael Mann’s divisive take on John Dillinger’s story makes for a fascinating movie.
We check out the Public Enemies Blu-ray… Public Enemiesis absolutely not that film.
But this didnt sit well with the powers that be, not least J Edgar Hoover.
This approach works in Depps favour, but not necessarily the films.
Depp puts in terrific work as Dillinger, exposing the pressures and short term approach of the man.
Its a terrific piece of characterisation he manages, suitably far away from Jack Sparrow, and superbly executed.
Thus, the effect isnt quite the same.
I did like the film a lot, though, and I wasnt really expecting to.
Its not perfect, but its a good sight better than you may have been led to believe.
The Disc
The Blu-ray presentation of the film is excellent.
There are plenty of extra features here too.
Michael Manns educated, in-depth commentary track is a very informative piece of work.
Its a fascinating listen, from a man who absolutely knows his subject matter inside out.
This comes across in his appearance in the assorted featurettes too.
And there are quite a few of them.
