Preacher finally gets to the bottom of things in the boundary-pushing “Backdoors.”

you’re able to wring some pretty effective storytelling from a godly being who isnt feeling particularly godlike.
In other words,Preacherspowers-that-be have been having a bit of fun at everyones expense.
Jesse is understandably annoyed to finally learn the truth about his maker, as well he should be.
This is the sort of God who never would have smote Sodom or Gomorrah.
But worse still than that, Backdoors posits that the majority of mankinds prayers were in vain.
In other words, the phrase from your lips to Gods ears is as meaningless as all those prayers.
But more on that in a bit.
Or at least we thought they were both trying.
Instead, shes energized by her long-simmering anger at Jesse.
Indeed, theyre all at each others throats, airing grievances and hurling difficult truths.
Tulip and Cassidy have been taken for granted long enough.
Even if God is within reach, theyre sitting out this last hunch of Jesses.
Which brings us to the notion of unheard prayers.
After numerous illusions to Jesses troubled childhood,Preachertakes us into the murky depths of the Louisiana bayous.
After his fathers murder, Jesse was raised by his fearsome Granma (played by Julie Oliver-Touchstone).
Young Jesse is fiercely loyal to his father, something which Granma LAngelle cannot abide.
I just hope well be seeing more of her next season.
Someone to adore, who will adore him in return.
No one would ever confuse AMCs Jesse Custer with Vertigos Jesse Custer.
That Heaven employs a backup system for caching prayer backlogs is another bombshell revelation.
(And here youd think prayers would be backed up to the cloud.)
The takeaway from this is that God never heardanyof Jesses prayers.
The futility of Jesses faith is staggering, a tragedy an entire lifetime in the making.
Its in moments like these thatPreachermakes the most out of the premise of a God shirking His heavenly duties.
Preacheralso makes the most out of Eugenes time in Hell.
Hitlers artwork is capable but bloodless.
Its not a terrible moment, as far as worst memories go.
But in Hitlers case, witnessingad infinitumhis last day as a good person is whats most traumatizing to him.
If this is indeed true,Preacheris somehow managing to mine one of historys blackest souls for true pathos.
Its got good meth and nice hiking.
Trying to mail the Saints weapons is a good sight gag but thats about it.
Tulip is smarter and better than this.
A cheap laugh is just thatcheap.Preacheris better than this, too.
Disgusting as it might be, using entrails to siphon gas was brilliant.
We never saw it happennor did we need to for that joke to work.
