Haywire review

Director Steven Soderbergh turns his hand to the action genre with Haywire. How do he and MMA star turned actress Gina Carano fare? All of which I assumed would make for a near perfect action flick. This, however, is not the case. I cant stress enough thatHaywireisnt an action movie. There are about four key fight scenes, mostly short, but thats about it. Shame review

Steve McQueen follows up his stunning debut Hunger with sex addiction drama, Shame. As one would expect, theres a lot of sex and nudity. Mulligan is also solid in her supporting role, but for my money is totally outshone by Fassbender. McQueens second feature bears many visual similarities to Hunger, but lacks that films raw and engaging dynamism. Rating: 3 out of 5

Hell Train review

All three are English. All three are deeply flawed, and not a little arrogant. If they fail, their souls stay aboard the train forever. If they win, the train might not play fair. Its a portmanteau, but not as we know it. The Englishness portrayed here is very much a negative thing. It sounds like the sort of thing he might do. Rating: 3 out of 5

Looking back at the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie

Before Sarah Michelle Gellar, there was Kristy Swanson as Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Watching it now does feel slightly weird. To any diehardBuffy The Vampire Slayerfan, Sarah Michelle Gellar is Buffy. Its even weirder to see Buffy when shes being played by someone else. And yet whisper it the movie really isnt as bad as everyone thinks it is. You just have to block out any thoughts of the TV series of the same name....

Goon review

Seann William Scott, ice hockey, violence, blood and the odd loose tooth. The violent rookie and the violent pro? you might see the showdown coming, and its no lesser for it. What anchors the film is one of Scott William Scotts most likeable performances. What this adds up to is a film that, inevitably, is tonally all over the place. The comedy and violence arent natural bedfellows at all, and the two elements simply dont gel....

Sonic Generations Nintendo 3DS review

Sonic Generations brings two very different kinds of platform game together for the first time. Heres Philips review of the Nintendo 3DS version… Single-player would naturally be your first port of call, presenting you with the main menu screen. Classic Sonic is very much limited with his moves. Modern Sonic has more moves in his armoury. Jump again, and youll jump to it. Naturally, as the levels go by, the special stages get harder, with more bombs and obstacles....

The Iron Lady review

Louisa checks out The Iron Lady… The first lot neednt have worried, becauseThe Iron Ladyis no leftist hatchet job, quite the reverse. Newcomer Alexandra Roach fills in as the young Margaret Roberts before the pearls and handbag became a firm fixture. For all its British provenance,The Iron Ladyis essentially a Hollywood treatment of Thatchers career. Shes painted as a plucky feminist underdog who follows her convictions whatever the cost. Maggie starts her life at Oxford as Jack fromTitanic, not knowing which forks to use....

Looking back at The Box Of Delights episode 6: Leave Us Not Little

Perhaps wed best start there. But my younger self, when I first saw this final episode, felt enormously let down. And thats what it felt like. Its a real pity, and a disappointing end to such an enchanting story. I still feel that way on rewatching the show. So thats what I intend to pretend I did. He cant half summon some good stuff, though. Cue the entrance of assorted creatures, who have the job of basically knackering the transport infrastructure....

Iwan Rheon interview: Misfits series 4, playing Simon, the US remake and more

Since its first episode in 2009, the success of E4sMisfitshas been nothing short of remarkable. I have absolutely no idea. I think theyve just started to storyline it now, so who knows what will happen. I really like how Simon has developed and I feel Ive been really lucky with the writing. Ive basically had to find the journey to make Simon become him. In the future, I guess, the story has already been told....

Dylan Moran Yeah Yeah Live In London DVD review

Irish comedian Dylan Moran returns with a new set full of bitterness and surrealism. Morans shtick has always been surrealism-tinged observation delivered with a deceptive languor. Ad content continues below Yeah Yeahsticks to the formula, combining misanthropy with Romantic wistfulness and self-deprecation. The material might not have much edge, but it does have a ton of charm and wit. Morans routine appears to spiral randomly inwards and outwards, moving from one casually tossed-away observation to another....

Tim Minchin And The Heritage Orchestra Live At The Albert Hall DVD review

Heres Louisas DVD review… Its not been a bad year for Tim Minchin. In the rock world, the massive orchestra has become a kind of shorthand for Spinal Tap-style stage excess. As ever, most of the best stuff happens while Minchins buttocks are plonked firmly on the piano stool. Rating: 2 out of 5

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows review

Also on the wishlist? The reason being that many of the problems havent been fixed, and thats a real frustration. As the opening credits finally began, I was already feeling pretty let down. In fact, the performances of all the main cast are great pretty much throughout. The part feels like it could have been played by anyone. Its just a shame that some of those main problems with the first movie havent been rectified....
