Josh Hutcherson interview: The Hunger Games

Forget trying to choose between vampires and werewolves. Forget dark wizards and school bullies. Without going too far into spoiler territory: its pretty brutal. And its also pretty awesome. Ad content continues below (Beware:this interview may contain somespoilersif you havent read the book!) Ive seen a little bit of that already so Im sure its going to happen. So I think that would be my big push for why people should be Team Peeta....

The Hunger Games review

Here’s our review. Gary Ross is a brave man. But Ross has done more than churn out a faithful adaptation of the book. The books are all written in the first person, letting us see the world only from Katnisss perspective. The film opens up that world, letting us see whats going on behind the scenes. That allows us more insight into other characters, and also makes the books political message more explicit....

We Bought A Zoo review

Don’t overlook Cameron Crowe’s film of We Bought A Zoo. It’s surprisingly charming, and human, cinema, even if it does go on a bit… Sometimes, the world forgets just how good a filmmaker Cameron Crowe is. For instance, he can coax excellent performances out of younger actors. Hes able to put across characters that you actually care about. And hes capable of springing a bit of a surprise. For most ofWe Bought A Zoo, though, Crowe pitches the material really very well....

Headhunters review

Looking for a fast-paced, funny, exciting thriller? You could do a lot worse than Headhunters, a sterling adaptation of a novel by Jo NesbA … Think back to some of the most interesting protagonists in movie history. Are they necessarily the broad-chested, square-jawed ones gifted by the god of genetics? Mostly, theyre not. Generally, its the more morally ambiguous heroes that stick more readily in the mind. Naturally, Roger and his accomplice go for the painting and, naturally, everything goes terribly wrong....

The key rules of watching a movie at home properly

Many of us are familiar with the unwritten bylaws of watching a film courteously in a cinema. But what about watching a film in the home…? Its common sense stuff, but its a sign of the times that it needs to be written down. However, why shouldnt watching a film at home be subject to such criteria, too? Ad content continues below 1. The trick to resolve this is some kind of pre-agreement....

In Darkness review

Oscar-nominated WWII drama In Darkness is out in the UK this Friday. Heres our review of a flawed yet uplifting film… Attempting to write aboutIn Darknessis a tricky proposition. WhereIn Darknessfalters, though, is in its pacing and cinematography. Having said this, some of the acting really does cut through the murk. Wickiewicz provides a robust lead performance, as does Kinga Preis, who plays his wife Wanda. The most impressive turn, however, comes from German actor Benno Furmann....

A Thousand Words review

How bad can an Eddie Murphy vehicle that’s sat on the shelf for years actually be? Hes got the life, thats for sure, but hes always looking for more. Is this bodhi tree a gift from Sinja? The tree simply appeared on Jacks land, as the tree and Jack are one. This foliage comes with a catch: for every word Jack speaks, the tree loses a leaf. When the tree loses all its leaves, Jack loses his life....

Silent House review

The house is in pretty bad shape, so the refurb has been taking longer than expected. However, Sarahs not long for this work. Elizabeth Olsen is an incredible actress. Well, she pulls that off while looking legitimately terrified. Theres only one camera operator, and as far as I can tell, no visible cuts. The shift in tone is abrupt, though Olsen handles it well. US Correspondent Ron Hogan got more laughs out of Silent House than he did out of A Thousand Words....

Drokk: Music Inspired by Mega City One review

A 2000AD concept album you say? That phrase is retro-futurism. Barrow is a longtime2000ADreader and head of Invada Records, home to the album. Its a side-project and labour of love for both artists. The effect is a bit like an orchestra comprised of Cylons, T-800s and some very prodigious heart monitors. Now that were all casual cyborgs jacked into the matrix its more like a sirens call. Stand-out tracks are hard to select as the standard is high....

Looking back at Magnum P.I.

Join Neil on his celebration of 80s Hawaii-set detective show Magnum P.I. It approaches as the morning sun silhouettes it with a heavenly glow. Hes twenty-five years older, but could still kick all our asses. He coolly removes his aviator glasses, slyly raises both eyebrows, and grins sarcastically. TheMagnum P.I.theme charges in as: TITLE CARD: SUMMER, 2013 Boom! Can you picture that? But bear with me because putting it on paper does serve a purpose....

The Cabin In The Woods review

Is Joss Whedon’s The Cabin In The Woods the best horror movie in years? Here’s Sarah’s review of a perfectly constructed shocker… Cue buckets of fake blood, running, screaming; the end. So, yeah,The Cabin In The Woodslooks very, very familiar. But its relying on the fact that you know that. But while the pieces are all there, they could end up anywhere. But it isnt just a straightforward kids-go-to-the-woods-and-get-murdered movie....

Ad content continues below This story marked the first appearance of Leela, played by Louise Jameson. She was basically modelled after Eliza Doolittle, and perhaps unlike any of the Doctors other companions. Then again, the Doctor has his own fair share of violent transgressions in this story....

21 Jump Street review

21 Jump Street heads to the big screen, with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum headlining. As they both soon find out, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Jenko is still a great athlete; Schmidt is still incredibly smart. The two decide that they should work together. So far so good. Of course, just because the two complement one another doesnt mean theyre somehow good cops. Ad content continues below...
