The Walking Dead S03 E13, Review

Finally, the episode we have all been waiting for: face off time between Rick and the Governor. I guess this means Andrea didnt have the chutzpah to knife him in his sleep. Rick remarks, I thought you would take responsibility. Basically, this one little exchange told Rick everything he needed to know about that jackass. The man is full of shit, deeply manipulative and a complete sociopath. A message that was hammered home when the Gov observed the Lil Ass Kickers questionable parentage....

Archer S04E08: Coyote Lovely, Review

What’s our Agent Archer up to this week? Agent Sterling Archer is extremely bored. I know, Lana responds with all the sweet condescension of his mother. It is just another dry day of stacking rocks in descending order for Codename Duchess…until she appears. Oh, who am I kidding? It is more like a large lake or a small sea worth of incompetence. Apparently, the three were sent down to Texas thanks to Mallorys shady Border Patrol connections....

Community, S04, E05, Review

This is the second episode of Community in a row to put me in a really odd state. With these forces combined, a tickling of the heartstrings is achieved. Both plots feel contrived in a number of ways. Worse is the extremely sloppy setup of the situation at Shirleys house. We only see her living room briefly and then the rest of the time is spent in the garage. Jeffs dad issues have been built up for long enough that this handling of it feels rushed and anticlimactic....

Top Gun IMAX 3D (1986), Review

Top Gun (1986) is in IMAX theaters in a 3D release commemorating the movie’s 27th anniversary. Eventually I rented it at a local store called JTL Video because Blockbuster did not exist yet. That is why I always turned to the movies as an escape. He also played Batman at one point but that is a story for another time. The movies flight sequences were like nothing moviegoers had ever seen before....

Banshee, S01E08: We Shall Live Forever, Review

Banshee on Cinemax: smackdown TV fight of the year! SPOILERS The fight of the season! Cinemaxs Banshee continues to kick my ass as one of the best shows of the New Year. But that is Balls signature gear in his preceding work in both television and movies. When the episode begins Carrie/Anastasia has finally succumbed, with her and Hood in bed together. The first six minutes of the show are sex, sleep, repeat....

Portlandia, Season 3, Review

The culture of the city of Portland or lack thereof, is the basis for episode 9, Alexandra. We couldnt ask for anything more from their love triangle. Awkward roommate situations run rampant over the final three episodes ofPortlandiaand that isnt limited to the human race. Portlands revitalization has been well documented, but that spells trouble for the citys rodents. Rarely inPortlandiado skits have multi-episode arcs, but the love triangle needed to be resolved....

What it means when people play chess in the movies

Its a kind of shorthand, and it gives us a lot of information. Unfortunately, it can also take the place of decent acting, scene-setting and characterisation. But hey, thats what we get for being so darned clever at this reading film stuff. Since the silent era, films have used chess as code for a number of character traits. This part of the story didnt make it into the movie version....

Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere BBC Radio 4 launch report

And as every good fantasy fan knows, theres very little cooler than a swishing cape. The cast is great, the story is equal parts witty and creepy, the sound design is cathedral-large. In summary,Neverwhereis appointment radio. You shouldnt miss it. Lenny basically said at the time would I write a TV series for him on the BBC. He said, Ive got one idea. We could do something about tribes of homeless people in London....

Tomb Raider (PC), Review

Crystal Dynamics wanted a cinematic experience, and boy have they achieved one. The first time that Lara is forced to kill is a particularly moving scene. Theres also a cool hunting mechanic thats sadly abandoned after the opening sections. Hand-to-hand combat is abysmal, with a scramble move to dodge incoming attacks and an often ineffective melee counter. But hands down, the biggest disservice inTomb Raideris the horrendous overuse of unforgiving Quick Time Events....
