The films are generally pretty awful, but occasionally we strike gold. So why hasWet Hot American Summerendured? Put simply,Wet Hot American Summeris not your average summer camp movie. Its a film which constantly surprises, with Wain and Showalter rarely going for the obvious joke or story. Even some of the stranger characters and storylines in the film leave you feeling sympathetic to those involved.

For Hanson, those essentials were Ellroys characters. Those vistas soon give way to scenes of organised crime as Hudgens tells of the downfall of Mickey Cohen. The bright cinematography captures this perfectly, eschewing more traditional film noir techniques in favour of something more modern....

Two prep school teachers battle each other as the actors fight with the script. Read our review of Words and Pictures. Although the whole school gets involved in the war, not much happens until the end of the film. Its brought up in dialogue a lot (But what about the war?) The first problem with all this is that Marcus comes across as a boorish jerk. Both Owen and Binoche are fine, fine actors, but their work here is overly forced....
