Orange Is The New Black: Take A Break From Your Values

OITNB flirts with the dangers of character bloat in this episode. Here’s our review. The problem with these Netflix series is that they are created for a viewing public who lack restraint. Sure, make the entire season available all at once. Yes, we all felt pity for the nun; locked in prison for political protest. Except the only cause Sister Jane was working for, was herself. Imagine if Piper, Alex, and Pennsatucky all had a baby....

Sailor Moon: Girls Unite – The End of Jadeite review

Jadeite gets what’s coming to him in this episode 13 of classic Sailor Moon. Here’s our review. Jadeite, however, does not fare so well. Other than that, though, this episode was… I mean, it was okay. Id probably rate it higher if I gave a crap about Jadeite, but I dont. His death meant nothing to me. Jadeite was just a dick. And then he died. All true, but did we need thirteen episodes worth?...

Shovel Knight Review

Shovel Knight balances 8-bit nostalgia with original gameplay ideas for an incredibly well-rounded adventure. Just as our hero leaps up to catch her, he awakens from his dreams, alone and devastated. This is not your typical retro-inspired video game. IfShovel Knighthad come out twenty years ago on the NES, it would have turned my entire world upside-down. Then there is the bouncing mechanic, which changes the pace of the gameplay in an instant....

A Farewell to Hank Moody: The Californication Series Finale

When Hank had little to grip on to, he found Karen in other places. Everything that I write is either for her or about her, Hank tells Atticus in season six. Im with her, even if Im not. He became the master of letting it out and putting on the I didnt mean to face. And we all know that is women. Really, Becca was back to show she was a survivor....

Looking back at Dick Tracy

The benefit of having such strong visuals is that it tends to distract from the somewhat slight plot. As the eponymous detective, Beatty puts in an impressively physical performance. The ultimate scene-stealer though is Al Pacino in an Oscar-nominated role as Big Boy Caprice. Its the perfect role for him really considering his propensity for combining unpredictable shouting with a sense of menace. Im gonna have a thought. Its coming… Its gone as he attempts to find a solution....

Looking back at Peter Sellers in Hoffman

Rush does a really good job of putting across his deep-seated sense of emptiness. Sellers once said of himself, I could never be myself… You see, there is no me. I do not exist… There used to be a me, but I had it surgically removed. I dont think you often see the emptiness of him on film. When hes fully immersed in his characters theres only the pleasure of being entertained by him....

Mark Waid On Daredevil, Hulk, Marvel, and More

Mark Waid:Yeah. Ad content continues below Thoughts on the Amazon/Comixology deal so far? Just as a competitor and as somebody who actually works with them. I mean, as a competitor, its not… look, I salute them. You know, as a publisher and as a comics guy. Because, you know, the strong arm tactics that gives Amazon… weve seen. So, I think thats… I just think thats a very dangerous precedent....

Selfies, Jennifer Lawrence and the modern movie star

An entire industry rose up around movie stardom in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Until at least the 1980s, the star phenomenon continued. Even here, however, there were signs that things were changing. An article written by Amy Nicholson forLA Weeklymight have the answer. She thanks Cruise for attending her recent Legends Ball, where she honored Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King. I turned and looked at one point and you were standing in the chair going, Yes!...

The Leftovers: Pilot review

HBO’s The Leftovers isn’t pretty, but it sure is compelling. Here’s our review of the first episode. The Leftoversbegins with a woman and her infant child at the laundromat. Im not going to sugarcoat this:The Leftoversis an ugly show. I dont mean that aesthetically. One has to wonder what Lindelofs headspace was like when making such a dark and solemn affair. That sigh of relief doesnt last long. Its heart-wrenching stuff, but Im not sure if it qualifies as entertaining....

True Blood: I Found You Review

Like Jason Stackhouse on the trail, the second episode of True Blood jumps right on its target. And yes, we talk about that scene. So, lets get this out of the way right now: Forget shipping. And honestly, its a shame that this scene overshadows everything else in tonights episode. Why not begin the remaining six episodes with other blood dream fantasies as well and get every ship covered? Actually, I can guarantee there will be at least one more to come…...

WildStar Review

How awesome is WildStar? Combat feels great, and is obviously the games greatest asset. Its action packed, and a much welcomed breath of fresh air into the MMO space. It is immensely gratifying to get that gank. But world PvP aside, the battlegrounds and arena battles are also pretty intense. Because of the combat system, it is like having a completely separate game within the game. Hell, give me a 10v10 Arena battle while youre at it....

The Legend of Korra: The Earth Queen Review

Korra calls her out on her bullshit and takes off. Meanwhile, Kai has trouble kicking his pickpocket habit and sneaks away to have some fun. Mako and Bolin go after him, catching him in the act.
