The Newsroom Season 3 Goes Out On Top Or Something Like It

A shortened final season of The Newsroom dramatically improved on its rocky beginnings. Is it enough to save the show’s legacy? Series creator and head writer Aaron Sorkin took the brunt of criticism. Unless youre doing an anthology series, its hard to completely start over in television. Three episodes into the season, looks like Sorkin and Daniels werent just giving the press lip service. Sorkin still finds a way to romanticize the idea of reporters holding on to their integrity....

Interstellar Review

Director Christopher Nolans long-awaited sci-fi epic Interstellar arrives. Nolan throws a lot of ideas and a lot of movie at us forInterstellarsnearly three-hour running time. Its the near future and an agricultural blight has descended upon the planet, destroying every crop but corn. On a pure filmmaking level,Interstellaris jaw-dropping and almost demands to be seen in IMAX. Hathaway is striking as Amelia Brand, whose icy, guarded exterior hides a vulnerable core....

Remembering Paul Newman in the early 1980s

Paul Newman was very much a movie star by the time the 80s rolled around. His rebelliousness was appealing, and his smile was box-office gold. He looks older, wiser, and has a sense of watchful stillness in his performances. The scripts are challenging, at times controversial, and far from predictable. There are no easy answers to the problems raised. But this isnt just is a New York version of that film....

Why our little world needs cinematic space odysseys

Dont panic, and remember: In space no one can hear you scream.) The directors works are received with critical adulation and commandeer colossal box office numbers. (And possibly even more widely understood than the word Inception). This is epic science fiction cinema setting its sights on space deep outer space beyond our native planetary system. I maintain that thats true even if the movie is actually a bit crappy. Cinema was invented to send the masses into space and give them extraterrestrial, alien experiences....

Big Hero 6 Review

Walt Disney Animation Studios has been on a winning streak lately. Hes a genius even by these futuristic standards. But their greatest achievement is unsurprisingly the films real mascot (sorry Fred): Baymax. I write that as the highest compliment. Baymax is surrounded by an equal number of colorful teammates. The standouts of the group are Honey Lemon and Fred. It was a charming testament to the strength of Disney. I doubt in another year that children will be quoting Baymax and his affection for hairy baby kittens....
