Marvels Jessica JonesNetflix series has become something of a phenomenon.

We spoke with Mr. Colter by phone earlier this week about introducing Luke Cage onJessica Jones.

), Ive moved all the questions that could containJessica Jonesspoilers to the bottom.

But consider this aserious spoiler warningbecause we discussed big moments from the back half of the season.

Well give you one more warning before they start.

You must be busy.

How are you today?

Well, you know, today Im actually in the gym right now getting a workout in.

Gotta do it.

Today I actually have a day off which is very unusual.

Thank you for using it to call me.

No worries, no worries, always a pleasure.

You know, it was always the plan.

But they already had planned to do that.

It was planned that way because it was hard to tell one story without the other.

So Im happy that it played out that way.

I was happy to be a part of that.

Of course, we know all the characters populate each others stories.

Were there any Luke Cage comic book stories that were key for you?

Some of the characters that were using are definitely from those comic books.

So Im really happy about that.

We obviously see Jessica.

He does still use the phrase Sweet Christmas.

He and Melissas take on it based on theAliascomic books, which are more current.

Theres more to come.

How different is the tone of theLuke Cageseries?

The tone is, in the sense that it is adult.

It is grounded in realism and it is able to deal with very heavy issues, its similar.

In the sense that its tonally different, I like to say theres musicality toJessica Jones.

As you notice with the music and the way the themes are unveiled.

Theres always something about the musicality of something, even in dialogue, that is distinct and very different.

Thats Melissa Rosenbergs voice, thats the writers voice, Scott Reynolds.

Really those guys who wrote have a certain musicality.

Where he is uptown is going to feel different than Hells Kitchen.

Were all in the city but I guess uptown specifically versus Hells Kitchen.

So there are similarities but definitely youre going to notice that youre in Harlem as opposed to Hells Kitchen.

We want to be true to Harlem as a part of town and distinctly different than Hells Kitchen.

Youre calling me from the gym today.

Youve always been a very fit guy and weve seen your work before.

Yeah, yeah, it is absolutely because I pretty much dont eat things that I shouldnt eat.

That way I dont have to worry about going to the gym to correct those things.

I take a stab at have a good diet.

I just do the cardio and pretty much eat well.

From here on out, were getting into heavy SPOILER territory forJessica Jones.

Dont read if you havent seen all 13 episodes ofJessicaJonesyet.

They had us using some of those scenes from further episodes.

So those scenes, that was one of the scenes they had us doing.

We didnt see all the stuff that we then played.

So this is all something that I knew but I didnt know how it evolved and how it happened.

You cant play the scene before it actually happens.

Were always shooting out of context.

It was just about discovering Jessica, discovering who she was.

Trying to connect with her and making our relationship blossom.

Thats what it was about.

It wasnt about this is the woman who killed my wife.

Well, you could if you could get around hearing what hes telling you.

How vulnerable was it for you when you played the scenes where you got Kilgraved?

It was one of those things where its almost like playing another character.

Youre doing something that is unlike you as the character and you have complete permission.

Its like youre playing a bad guy and youre justifying yourself and your actions.

You pretty much are doing things 100% and not judging yourself.

Which we know what that meant, that she shot him in the head.

That stopped him but he was at all times kind of in and out of this control.

As strong as he is physically, he couldnt stop himself from doing those things to her.

Youre trying to figure out how much of that was Luke and how much of that was Kilgrave.

Its hard to figure out which parts.

The audience will always have those questions.

It may never be answered what part was Luke and what part was Kilgrave.

Were the sex scenes with Jessica like doing fight choreography?

Yeah, a bit of it.

Theres always more setups and more angles.

There are also more and more takes.

I was joking with Krysten, its almost like doing 1000 push-ups.

How many times are we going to shoot this again?

My arms are turning to jelly at this point.

I can barely hold myself up.

I dont want to crush her.

Then the actual fight scene where youre tearing through the walls, how long did that take?

We had a really good stunt team that came in.

That episode was long.

I love the choices that they made.

Im gonna kick her butt.

Then you go over there and you get thrown in the river.

Thats what I think is so cool about her.

She possesses a power that is not so readily seen.

I never thought shes just a girl, I can kick her butt.

I was actually worried she was tougher than Luke in that scene.

Oh, awesome, awesome.

It just doesnt go into the skin.

A dull tipped needle that will bend if you push it hard enough.

How they do it, I actually dont know.
