Matt Smith’s role in Terminator Genisys is being kept under wraps.

But we’ve got a theory…

This article contains revealed spoilers forTerminator: Genisys.

The rest is pure speculation on our part.

Paramount has begun to take the wraps off its reboot for theTerminatorseries,Terminator: Genisys, last week.

If you missed them, you could find them here.

Do be warned, we are going to have to discuss them further down, though.

So then: just who is Matt Smith playing?

McGsTerminator: Salvationwas supposed to be the start of a new Terminator trilogy as well, of course.

But that didnt go quite to plan.

No wonderTerminator: Genisyssigned Arnold Schwarzenegger up, himself in a big role, before it got going.

The Paramount press release that formally announced Smiths casting started to add some proverbial meat to the bones.

A strong connection, then.

you could see it above, with an exoskeleton Terminator in the background.

InTerminator 2: Judgment Day, John Connor nded up relying on such a Terminator.

As he did inTerminator 3: Rise Of The Machines.

As a result, hes not as distrusting of robots as his mother once was.

We know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is an old model Terminator.

Hes the son of Miles Dyson, the man who effectively put in place the building blocks for Skynet.

Basically: every lead role inTerminator: Genisyshas a name to it, apart from Matt Smiths.

Theres a big secret thats being kept, and revealing the characters name would presumably blow said secret.

Else why would simply revealing his name blow his cover?

We cant tell you anything about the role that hes playing, because we simply dont know.

But maybe its the fact that the secret is being kept that gives us the biggest clue.

Heres our theory, then.

His character doesnt have a name: it has a model name.

Were betting that Matt Smith is playing a Terminator.

She calls him Pops.

And he is programmed to guard rather than kill.

So wouldnt it make sense that Smiths Terminator would take on a similar role?

That he would be programmed to guard John Connor, to protect him at all costs?

CouldTerminator: Genisysbe a sort-of buddy movie in that sense?

Or is he an undercover Terminator, who will turn on them?

Again: we dont know the answer to just what Smiths role is.
