On the surface its hard to conceive of why.

Still, theres something sad about the most wonderful time of the year.

Or maybe people just dont like their families.

But Id venture that more than anything its the quiet.

Christmas is the only day on the Judeo-Christian calendar where the world comes to a halt.

The restaurants arent open, the T.V.

Theres truly some melancholy there hiding behind the year.

Christmas specials have long been a staple of British television.

The Offices Christmas special is particularly special because it functions as the unofficial series finale.

It comes back to that sense of melancholy that both Christmas andThe Officeshare.

Without The Office, there is noBoJack Horseman,Rick and MortyorReview.

Hell, withoutThe Officethere may not even be aLeftoversorMad Men.

Whats interesting when revisitingThe Offices Christmas special is that Christmas is barely featured at all.

Instead its all about capturing that melancholic feeling.

Still, the mere idea that its the holiday season somehow makes everything even sadder.

David Brent, in particular, is a mess.

The post-Officedocumentary David Brent is a fascinating, yet still loathsome beast.

But what he does have, is cameras.

Who the fucks that?

he spits back Who are you!

What have you been on before?

Nothing, as if it were a reflex…which it basically is.

Aside from Gareth in charge, things havent changed much.

But thats whereThe OfficeChristmas special makes the best of its mockumentary format.

In real life, people move away and youre likely to lose touch with them.

Tim made a move for Dawns heart and he failed so she moves away to Florida.

If this werent a TV show, that would likely be the end of it.

But the producers ofThe Officeare capable of changing the script a bit so to speak.

At first, their investment in a plane ticket looks to have been a sunk cost.

Then the Christmas party stars and everything is great.

Then Lee bitches out and makes Dawn leave early with him.

Still, despite the best efforts of theThe Offices producers, there was no miracle.

The people you work with are people you were just thrown together with, he begins.

You dont know them.

You had no choice.

And yet you spend more time with them than you do your friends and your family.

So obviously when someone comes in who you have a connection with…yeah.

I dont know what a happy ending is.

Life isnt about endings is it?

Its a series of moments.

You turn the camera off, its not an ending, is it?

My lifes not over.

Come back in ten years and see how Im doing then.

I could be married with kids.

Life just goes on.

She finally comes to her senses, dumps her loser finace and returns to the party to kiss Tim.

All it does it bring people together and then we decide the rest.
