Well, I was pitched the idea by Nicola Larder (Marcellas co-creator and executive producer).
I really liked that because it sounded like something I could probably work with.
The opportunity to work abroad was what really attracted me, I have to say.
Are you a fan of British crime dramas, then?

I cant get to see all of them, but I do enjoy British TV.
I mean, we probably get the best over here.
That was the challenge for me could I do that in London, as I do in Sweden?
The work itself was very much as it is in Sweden in terms of the writing process.
For example, we didnt kill a dog, even though people seem to think that!
I think perhaps that the press focused a lot on Anna (Friel).
I think thats also perhaps a cultural difference.
There were just small things there was no culture clash.
No, we dont have that.
You wrote the scripts in Swedish and then they were translated into English, is that correct?
Im sure there werent very many!
Like most Scandinavians, your English is perfect.
Well, it helps that we subtitle everything we dont dub anything.
We listen to English from when were born!
Its a very welcome development.
Yeah, so I understand theyve really created a niche for themselves in showing programmes in foreign languages.
Did you find the way TV shows are produced inBritain to be very different from the Swedish system?
No, I think its basically the same, actually.
The writing system was very much the same.
We dont move around that much, we dont have these trailers on set.
Theres a bigger scale to everything, basically.
Did you spend a lot of time on the set ofMarcella?
I was able to visit the set two or three times.
Im not an on set, hands-on kind of guy.
Yeah, we wanted that, and we said so really early.
Ive been very fortunate to work with good directors and location managers.
We dont have many buildings from before the 1950s in it.
That choice really came across on the screen.
Will there be moreMarcella?
Marcella Backland andThe Bridges Saga Noren are both strong, compelling female characters.
I enjoy writing about female characters more than I do male characters, for some reason.
I think thats part of me being around more women.
The majority of my friends are female, and the people I surround myself with are 80% female.
Its really just about making him or her as interesting as possible.
Theres been a very positive response to the depiction of Saga as an autistic woman.
Id say you all deserve immense credit for what is a nuanced and sensitive portrayal.
The discussion Ive seen has been overwhelmingly positive.
As I say, 90% is positive, at least of the feedback I get.
Series three ofThe Bridgewas absolutely fantastic.
Is a fourth series definitely happening?
We havent got the final go-ahead yet, but we are writing it at the moment.
Id say were coming back!
I think well get it.
I think thats actually changed now.
We had a script meeting last week, and I think we just threw that out.
(Laughs)
Well, well be very excited to see what you do come up with!
Yeah, I think weve changed that to something better.
Is there any chance that well ever see Martin again, or is that door very much closed now?
We will not bring him back just for nostalgia.
We need him to really advance our story, but never say never.
As it is now, though, hes not in.
That might change, just like the Halloween thing.
Series three worked incredibly well, and Thure Lindhardts made an indelible impression as Henrik.
That character was very much a reaction to the absence of Martin.
That was something we had to come up with.
That was really good for us.
We couldnt fall back on anything, so it was very helpful.
Hans Rosenfeldt, thank you very much!
Marcella arrives on digital download and DVD on 20thJune, 2016 from Universal Pictures (UK).
