We spend a few nights inside Arkham Asylum in the latest episode of Gotham, “Rogues Gallery.”
Here’s Mike’s review…
ThisGothamreview contains spoilers.
Ive been tough onGothamthis year.
Plus, remember how miserableAgents of SHIELDwas for much of its first season?
With that polite preamble out of the way, Im so conflicted about this episode.
It did lots of little things right, and a couple of big things, too.
I do feel that was spoiled by some truly bad decisions, but well get to those.
For now, I should focus on the positives.
Ive often felt thatGothamtries to do too much.
Rogues Gallery scaled things back considerably, and to its benefit.
This is also a good thing.
We get to meet Dr. Leslie Tompkins this week, as well.
Morena Baccarin is always a welcome presence, and I do hope we see more of her.
They dont beat us over the head with the significance of her character, which is also refreshing.
And then there are little moments where the show just does what it does visually so well.
But now, this is where things have to get ugly.
Remember what I said aboutGothamoften trying to do too much?
Well, if its looking for barnacles to clear, then heres where they should start.
Because youve shown us an open bottle of pills on a nightstand?
I never giveArrowa pass for crap like this, and Im sure not going to give one here.
What has it been, two weeks since Barbara left Jim for Renee?
Nurse Dorothy was a former Arkham inmate, who hunkered down in the basement for years.
The alternative however, is far less appealing.
So, which one is it?
Because Im honestly not sure.
Im not being a smartass, here.
I would like to go out on a positive note, though.
That was a great ending.
But even here…Gothamtries to do just a little too much.
She kept her clinic in the worst part of town to help people who needed it.
During the prison break sequence, theres a distinctive cackle, much louder than the others.
This is certainly NOT The Joker, but they definitely wanted to tease us a little.
Its been awhile since weve had anything resembling a Joker easter egg.
Hes not Maxie Zeus.
Hes not the Electrocutioner.
Hes just another mad genius now roaming the streets.
Hes a cool, sinister presence, though, and they do promise us well see more of him.
Im looking forward to it.
Doesnt appear to be the guy, and its certainly not an archaeological Dr. Lang from Smallville, either.
Let me know which ones I missed!
