I will get this out of the way right up front so that there is no confusion.

If youve read my TV ramblings in the past, you may already know where this is going.

You cant (with rare exceptions) judge a TV show by its pilot.

Theres too much heavy-lifting that has to be done.

If the show is particularly high concept (asGothamis), theres an even steeper hill to climb.

With that in mind, theGothampilot (directed by Danny Cannon) becomes even more difficult to judge.

When it works, it works very well.

If youre reading this, youre already familiar with the basic concept ofGotham.

Essentially, Gotham City before Batman and/or the Rise of Jim Gordon.

Moments like these are whenGothamdoes its best work.

Robin Lord Taylors Oswald Penguin Cobblepot stands out, as well.

Its pretty clear that this seasons villainous arc will belong firmly to the Penguin.

Plenty of room to grow, here.

Not everything needs to be connected.

Along with these performances,Gothamlooksgreat, although theres an element of inconsistency here, too.

Scenes fluctuate between a very recognizable New York City, to more stylized sets and lighting choices.

Its a little jarring, and its just another symptom ofGothams larger identity crisis.

Then again, this might just be an irritating comic book fan reading of that scene.Your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately, this episodes overall plot doesnt do the show any favors.

Even by police procedural standards, this is a fairly thin story.
