Gears of War makes its debut on the Xbox One.

Is it a welcome return for the series?

Here is our review!

A lot has changed since then.

Epic Games is no longer working on the series it created.

And overall, it is a successful one.

It shouldnt surprise you thatGears of Wartranslates quite well to current-gen.

Even on the 360, the series was always above average in the graphics department.

So the graphical improvements inUltimate Editionare subtle.

The animation, especially when it comes to characters faces, looks way better than it did in 2006.

But thats only natural.

Theres a lot less of a jump in looks then, say,Halo: CEtoHalo: Anniversary.

Im not going to dwell on it, though.

And you shouldnt either.

Okay, lets move on.

There really isnt any way around the simple fact thatGears of Warholds up incredibly well today.

Shooting and sawing your way through hordes of meaty Locust is better inUltimate Editionthan it ever has been.

The improved physics, especially for those extra juicy blood splatters, make for a much more gruesome affair.

Youll be so happy you picked up your Lancer again.

Long range firefights play out as they always have, each sequence laid out like a mini-puzzle.

One false step in the dance and youre Locust food.

Gears of War: Ultimate Editionisnt without its flaws, of course, especially on the technical side.

I had to stand there waiting for my pal to finish exterminating Force ghosts before we could progress.

I also encountered a few instances of pop-in in the mine chapters of the game.

Pressing down on the B button doesnt immediately cue the sweet sound of chainsaw.

I dont remember Delta being this useless.

But I guess maybe thats something The Coalition decided to preserve.

But theyre in no way deal breakers.

Like I said, theres nothing a day 1 patch cant fix here.
