We spoke to its director Carlos Saldanha…

It was very important.

I think thats why it became a classic.

I was always trying to think, what is it that makes that special?

The idea of being true to who you are.

You mention your children reading the book, when was your first encounter with this story?

How can I make it into a bigger movie?

A lot of people interpret always the pacifism because he doesnt want to fight, thatsonelayer of it.

I think thats all connected, which I loved.

Youve been with Blue Sky for many years now, since back when you were animating cockroaches forJoes Apartment.

Technically its like light years ahead of when we hadJoes Apartment.

With a cockroach it was much harder, theyre like stiff.

Also, visually, were able now to use almost the full potential of our renderer.

There are so many.

I see that gentle face sitting down and smelling the flower.

Id love that to be a picture in a museum.

What needed hammering out?

To also find the tone and find the level of comedy with emotion.

Carlos Saldanha, thank you very much!

Ferdinand is out in cinemas this weekend.
