It really wasnt!
He said, Why dont you read this?
I think its something thatll be up your street.
I readSource Codeand I was completely oblivious.
I was really excited by how different it was.
Plus, I get to do a bit of romance.
I got excited about that and called Jake with what my take was, my pitch.
Fortunately, he liked the sound of it, which is how it all took off.
Did you add much to the script once you became involved?
Structurally, the script was in really good shape.
Theyd been working on it for a long time.
My big addition to the film was the tone.
I think the humour really allows them to do that.
Its been hard work trying to get that made.
So, solidly from then until now, Ive been doing a lot of this, to be honest.
So, I dont yet know if I have any leverage, as far as getting my films made.
Well have to see.
Hopefully, itll happen, and hopefully, itll help thatSource Codes been as successful as it has.
Youve said elsewhere thatMutes your personalBlade Runner.
Whats going on in other parts of the world?
Berlins always a city Ive found fascinating.
Its a city thats constantly on the change.
Again, its comparingBlade Runners Los Angeles.
What will Berlin be like in that same future?
Is it still as existential as the last two movies youve made?
I dont think so.
And I think, in that respect, its more story-driven than philosophically-driven.
What attracts you to sci-fi?
What are you most influenced by?
I love the what if nature of sci-fi.
I love incredibly imaginative, speculative sci-fi.
I loveStar Wars, things like that.
I also love the more mainstream sci-fi.
I love J G Ballad.
All of a sudden, its like spot the difference.
It really is different.
I really would have to react in a different way if the world were like this.
I like that aspect, the hypothesising in science fiction.
JG Ballad is just an example of the writers I like.
Philip K Dick is obviously one of them.
Im a big fan of William Gibson, as well.
He started cyberpunk withNeuromancer.
Its very cool to know he even knows I exist.
[laughs]
There has been talk!
And then well see.
I dont know what the situation is withWolverine.
Supermanwas another project your names been attached to.
I was on a list.
Do you really want to throw him into a big superhero franchise?
Obviously, it would have been fantastic to have had that chance.
For that project, in particular, I would have gone for it, I think.
Yeah, I was on that list, and it was very exciting for me.
Stuart, myself and Sam Rockwell, were the people who made the decisions onMoon.
The situation onSource Codewas very different.
But I was brought on by Jake.
They had to accept that.
It was part of the package.
If I was changing something, this was the reason why I was changing it.
Was that something you had to encourage the producers to let you include?
I really pushed for the ending that weve got right now.
And he sends that Goodman an email saying, kindly, help him.
And obviously, Sean Fentress is dead, because Colter took his place.
So, youre right.
I dont think it is.
Duncan Jones, thank you very much!
