Ron is beguiled by a potential stop-motion classic that will enthral kids and adults alike… With a pedigree like this, could the movie possibly go wrong?
Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) is an adventurous, precocious 11 year old girl with a problem.
Not exactly what she had in mind, given how much the boy talks.
For example, she has to count all the doors and windows, and everything blue in the house.
A world that will ultimately be too good to be true…
Coralineis a staggeringly beautiful film.
This is a work of art from Henry Selick, the heir to Ray Harryhausens stop-motion animation throne.
This film is simply incredible.
The same is true ofCoraline.
Thats one of the hallmarks of both Neil Gaiman and Selick.
This shared world view of charm mixed equally with dread is why this collaboration works incredibly well.
Also working surprisingly well is Teri Hatcher.
Shes really outstanding in this dual role, especially as the Other Mother.
Kudos to Keith David for his excellent work in the film as well.
It really is a picture with no real weaknesses.
It might even be better.
US correspondent Ron Hogan is apparently jockeying for presidency of the Neil Gaiman Fan Club.
