New Orleansis quite easily Herzogs most mainstream film to date.
HerzogsBad Lieutenant, like Ferraras movie, is a prolonged stare into a pit of moral decay.
Where Ferraras film was a peculiarly Catholic fable about sin and redemption, Herzogs treatment ofBad Lieutenantis unabashedly secular.
Cages McDonagh is a manifestation of the decay all around him.
Its worth noting, too, that McDonagh isnt even the most corrupt character in the film.
Thats not to say that McDonagh doesnt do very, very, bad things, however.
But within the hallucinatory context of the film, the lieutenants crime has its own kind of sick logic.
What are these fucking iguanas doing on my coffee table?
Cage, its good to see you back at the top of your game.
