Edgar Wright told us why he chose the songs for the incredible Baby Driver soundtrack.
Names like Scorsese and Tarantino spring to mind.
(Of course, thats not what happens.)
Im always looking for other things in the same vein.
I think Baby Driver is the B-Side of The Boxer.
I knew it because probably my first experiences with music was my parents record collection.
My parents had a box of 20 records, and that was it.
So I knew that album VERY well, and I used to really like that track.
Its one of those tracks where I was always curious about the lyrics of it.
I always thought it should end on that.
Maybe if theres a sequel, Ill put the Kiss song in there, he jokes.)
Id even driven from New York to L.A. listening to music the entire time.
Had Wright ever thought about setting the movie in New York?
Its funny, but the first two songs mention New York, but it never came up to me.
The sad thing is that L.A. and New YorkFrench Connectionasideto shoot this kind of movie is very difficult.
I never thought about it being in New York.
Okay, we love this revolving door.
If youre doing it one take, theres no way of faking that.
It was the T. Rex song first.
I thought, Oh, yeah, its about Jenny, the sister.
I wonder if I have a song named after me.
Because thats what well be hearing.
He said, Sure!
Thats why a lot of the instrumentals are in there.
For a bonus, check out a rare live version of this track here.
Theres not a single person on this planet, who doesnt have some kind of connection to this music.
I think its kind of fascinating that its something we all have a relationship with.
It happens quite a few times in the movie.
I really like that.
Whereas Focus sounds very Dutch.
Wright told us about how he first discovered the band.
And he says, Why isnt the Damned in more movies?
How do we, the Damned, get on a soundtrack?
Why cant we get some of that sweet soundtrack money?
I was watching this documentary after I had shotBaby Driver, thinking Oh my God!
Im going to really turn it around for The Damned.
So I hope they see the movie and enjoy it.
I think its from their best album, actually.Sheer Heart Attackis my favorite Queen album.
Sometimes you pick tracks where theres no video for it or nobodys done anything with it.
Its not been in any other movie.
An incredible, incredible guitar solo*.
At one point I thought, IsSheer Heart Attacktoo esoteric for an American audience?
