Episode names havent always been a priority for television shows.

In the time before internet that was perfectly forgivable.

Now episode names pop up virtually every time an episode is clicked on.

Still, episode names remain an under appreciated and often-ignored part of the art of making television.

They are not without their champions, however, andBetter Call Saulcreator Vince Gilligan is one of them.

The names are:

1.

Alpine Shepherd Boy

6.

Marco

Youll notice a pattern right off the bat, which is that every episode ends in o.

The effect is fun and playful sure but it also captures the smooth-talking nature of the series protagonist.

Mijo

Mijo is a Spanish term of endearment a combination of mi for my and hijo for son.

Nacho is Tucos cousin, Ignacio Nacho Varga.

He is largely abandoned plot-wise by seasons end but is crucially important early on.

He is brought in for supposedly kidnapping the rich Kettleman family and he forces Jimmy to be his attorney.

This seems like it could be Jimmys introduction to the seedy underbelly of Albuquerque.

Instead, he gets Nacho off the hook and resumes his passion of trying to be an honest attorney.

Hero

Notthathonest, though.

What is an Alpine Shepherd Boy?

But why is the episode ultimately called that?

Any guess or theory is legitimate.

And its all becauseBetter Call Sauldecided to create a pattern of episode titles…and then abandon it.

Sometimes its easy to create meaning out of thin air.

Five-O

The term Five-O is synonymous with police officers.

Fittingly, Five-O is all about cops the crooked ones and the good ones.

Five-O is about as succinct and perfect a name as possible.

If were stretching, bingo can also be interpreted as Bingo!

as in a Eureka!

Its the law designed largely to charge crimes made as part of a criminal organization.

Pimento

Five-O rightfully gets a lot of attention as the definitive Mike Ehrmantraut episode but Pimento shouldnt be ignored.

Marco

The season finalehas been criticized at times for being anti-climactic.

But still I think its possible.

And if thats the case, Im o.k.

Bless Vince Gilligan for taking an underappreciated part of T.V.

dramas, the episode titles, and having the audacity to appreciate them.

Also bless him for knowing when to quit.

The os were fun but they have a limit, especially after the stretches that were Pimento and Marco.

The title of the season two premiere?

Who knows, maybe episode two will be called Witch or Pitch.
