Alien: The 2-disc Collectors Edition review

It doesn’t get much better than this… Inside the packet for 20th Century FoxsAlien2-Disc Collectors Edition, theres a little fold-out inset. However, in this introduction, director Ridley Scott throws us an immediate curveball. Scott even says, flat out, This is for marketing purposes. Refreshing honesty, but I suppose when youre Ridley Scott you’ve got the option to do that. The transfer is a beautiful widescreen. The Nostromo is a gorgeous space-Gothic nightmare....

Aliens: The 2-disc Collectors Edition review

Few franchises have enjoyed such a respectful sequel as Aliens turned out to be. Ron gives this one a spin, too. The Company dumbly decides to colonise the planet discovered in the originalAlien. Awesomely frightening gun battles ensue. This film, likeAlienbefore it, probably doesnt need any set up. This is another fully-loaded double DVD set, as is befitting one of the best action movies ever made. Im a little shocked that the Directors Cut was originally assembled in 1991....

The Den of Geek interview: Dan O’Bannon

Dan OBannons projects are by now said to have collectively grossed over $1 billion for Hollywood. Well, I almost did. I supervised all of the effects onDark Starand executed many of them that taught me a lot of technology. I went over to Paris, which was quite a thrill, and I stayed there for six months. So I worked with them. I told Jodorowsky that for do these effects we were going to have to storyboard....

Marcus Brigstocke: Planet Corduroy review

Simon checks it out. Marcus Brigstocke is a funny man. Yet Brigstocke is a talented performer, and manages to pull things through. Its odd: its a good gig, as much because its actually as interesting as it is amusing. The lighting directors commentary, meanwhile, is a straight piss take, and a funny one at that. Rating: 4 out of 5

The Den of Geek interview: Dee Wallace

Working with Stephen King. Is that something that youre still doing? But isnt it exhausting to mine your emotions as ruthlessly as you did inThe Howling? Yes, it is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Hardly any films have tried a narrative in such a confined space. MaybePhone Booth…wasnt that something that intimidated you before taking the role? As an actor, are you kidding? You go My God!. I get to have this role for all this time....

Monty Python’s Life of Brian Blu-ray review

Great disc, though. Of theMonty Pythontelevision series, I cant confess to being a huge fan. If Britain has made many funnier films than this, Id dearly like to see them. Theres little to tell you about the movie that you dont already know. Was it the peak of thePythonphenomenon? For this reviewer, absolutely yes. Illustrated with preparatory drawings and storyboards, it justifies the disc cost alone. The interviews are up to date, which means its the surviving members of thePythonteam who are included....

Edgewise book review

Edgewise, written by Graham Masterton, is an all-too-rare entry in the pulp horror paperback market. Craig likes it, too… One such novel,The Manitou, was even made into a(sadly, quite lacklustre) movie. When she goes to investigate, her search reveals two masked men in the house. Thankfully, Lily escapes the blaze but the kids remain missing. Weeks of police (and Federal!) Nothing good can come of this! Ad content continues below...

The Mighty Boosh series three episode five (Party) review

Is this the best episode of The Mighty Boosh’s third series so far? We also get an answer to the question that manyBoosh-a-philes have always wondered… is Howard gay for Vince? And the answer is, well….maybe, just a bit. So how could you top all this? Rating: 4 out of 5

Marcus Brigstocke interview

Marcus Brigstocke has his maiden stand-up DVD,Planet Corduroy, out on sale now. Its good, too, as our impending review will testify. It takes 2 minutes, and involves, er, us offering to sing. Marcus rings us back, and all is well.] What Id have liked to have done is to do a commentary on the commentary. To have someone else do the commentary on the commentary on the extra. I Am Legend: Review

Will you be a Heston or a Smith person? Martin reviews the fourth screen version of Richard Matheson’s seminal horror novel. Manhattan hasnt been this intimidating sinceAfter Hours. Unfortunately they soon turn round and reveal themselves to be unconvincing CGI creatures that instantly destroyLegends costly verisimilitude. Except that CGI like Will Smith- gets big-budget films green-lighted. I can only suggest the compromise of staying for the first 75 minutes. Thats all the film-makers seem to have done....

The Den of Geek interview: Margaret Nolan

Margaret Nolan starred in the Carry Ons. She was the woman beneath the golden paint in Goldfinger. I went and lived in the mountains in Spain. In 1990 I bought my house, and thats it Ive been up there. I only came back this year, actually. Did you enjoy the ex-pat life? I lived in a self-sufficient farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. It was nothing to do with the Costa Del Sol....

The Den of Geek interview: Jonathan Lynn

He co-created and wrote Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. He directed Clue and My Cousin Vinny. He even wrote for On The Buses and acted in The Liver Birds.
