Doctor Who: Autonomy book review

Matt checks out the latest Doctor Who novel… I may find reviewing this book tricky. Tricky also because Im clearly not the target audience. Im aware that this is ridiculous the two books are worlds apart. On the other hand, perhaps Im a good person to be reviewing these books. I am, in short, a fresh pair of eyes. The adventure is set over the course of an evening. I have to say I rather enjoyedAutonomy....

Footprints (Le orme) review

Doralba checks out a clever little film that’s hard to pin down… I have read somewhere that this film defies classification in any given genre. Some call it sci-fi, others a thriller, some a drama, some a horror. (Let me tell you now, it is definitely not a horror movie.) Psychological thriller would also fit. The movie gives a wonderful surreal, dreamlike and chilling feel at the same time. The Klaus Kinski cameo is a very short one....

Ong Bak: The Beginning review

Tony Jaa steps behind the camera for Ong Bak 2. Then there was the first time I saw Tony Jaa inOng Bak. An impressive feat, made more so by the fact Im so much older and more jaded. That said,Ong Bak: The Beginningwas a fantastic amount of fun. If you think youve seen the full extent of Jaas brutality in his other films, think again. The film could best be described in one word massacre....

New Spider-Man Volume 4 Discs 1 & 2 DVD review

11 episodes of New Spider-Man leave Nick a very happy man… Theres something about the dazzling colors, catchy music and easy-to-follow storylines that make you crave more. Events happen with the rapidity of a movie trailer, barely pausing for breath. Introspective moments occur only when Spider-Man is swinging through Manhattan, expressing his feelings via voice-over. Characters are developed through flashbacks. Emotional moments are described by the heroes rather than felt by the viewers....

Paranormal Activity review

It’s a phenomenon in the making, that’s slowly sweeping the States. But is Paranormal Activity actually any good? While coming home from work a few weeks ago I saw a billboard forSaw VI. Then I realized that up until which point I didnt even know that there was aSaw IV. Paranormal Activitymock-uments the home movies of a couples investigation of demonic forces in their new home. A refreshing aspect ofParanormal Activitylies in its minimal amount of special effects....

Professor Layton And Pandora’s Box Nintendo DS review

And the game too. But that doesnt mean you shouldnt trust this review. It really does give a shot to live up to its predecessor, though and almost succeeds too. The storyline is similar, very similar, in fact. Murder, mystery and a famous, legendary artefact shape the tale. Layton decides to investigate the murder/curse and takes his old, unconvincing cockney sidekick with him. The structure of the game is pretty unaltered from the original too, but is still very enjoyable....

Revisiting Tim Burton’s Ed Wood

The film is released to critical and commercial failure and the big studios refuse to finance any further projects. Disheartened, Dolores tells him that he is not studio material and should find independent backers. The style of the movie itself is not exactly in line with Burtons previous directorial efforts. It would have destroyed the soul of the movie to have it any other way. Cast-wise Burton manages to bring together an amazing mix of actors who bring the story to life....

Torchwood: The Undertaker’s Gift by Trevor Baxendale book review

It’s a darker Torchwood world that’s being explored in the latest spin-off novel… Theres enough complexity here to keep the story moving along without it becoming weighed down by its own intricacy. There is bad language, but it doesnt feel shoe horned in or unnecessary. So, why only four stars? Yes, the novel is good.Yes, Baxendales writing flows with tension. Its definitely worth reading and doesnt have the rushed feel that the ending to his previousTorchwoodnovel had....

Family Guy Season 8 DVD review

Personally however, I buy animated boxsets for the episodes themselves. On that score, Season Eight is an absolute corker. Things start strongly with the return of James Woods inBack To The Woods. Out for revenge he steals Peters identity and pushes him out of his own home. These three have always been the shows strongest assets, in particular the burgeoning relationship between Stewie and Brian. and it shines in this episode....

Katamari Forever PS3 review

So, whats it all about then? You had to ask. In this particular outing, the King is hit on the head and rendered unconscious. Makes sense to me. Makes perfect sense, eh? Well, just wait until you sample the actual dialog; youll never touch drugs again. Its eye-catching, and possibly eye-twitching stuff, and its all wrapped around the quirky, core game mechanic. Theres also the addition of Katamari Drive. This is a new mode where the Katamari rolls along at high speed....

Pandorum review

The plot is an intriguing take on the getting-a-little-bit-hoary-now amnesia chestnut. Pandorums atmosphere is also spot-on, with every scene drenched in ominous paranoia and claustrophobic dread. Visually the film is very cool, too, in that post-MatrixManga homage style. But for the main part,Pandorums strengths outweigh its weaknesses. And fans of sci-fi horror in particular should leave the theatre more than happy. Rating: 3 out of 5

Up review

Mark had been eagerly looking forward to Pixar’s Up. However, Im not completely convinced by some of their movies. I foundFinding Nemooverly sentimental andCarsleft me entirely cold. Pixar has an enviable track record in memorable characters, plot development, stunning design and breathtaking animation. Dont get me wrong: the film looks and moves wonderfully. My issues are all to do with the subject matter, the character development and the overall pacing....

Hot Fuzz Blu-ray review

What follows is almost two hours of gunplay, gore and witty one-liners. There were characters here that were worryingly close to people Ive known. Its like a whos who of the very best of British cinema and comedy. The Disc Being a recent film, the transfer to Blu-ray is a fairly straightforward one. Theres plenty here for their fans and its great value for money. Im less sure about some of the other options on the Blu-ray, personally....
