The Sorcerer’s Apprentice review

Is he going to give me a great performance? Is he going to give me a bad performance? Is he going to give me an awesomely bad performance? He doesnt get out much, despite the best efforts of his roommates. However, Dave is special. Not special in the way in which special is a pejorative term, but special in an actual sense. Victoria, another apprentice, gave up her life defending the earth from Morgan le Fay....

World War II: Lost Films (WWII In HD) Blu-ray review

The History Channel’s World War II in HD series arrives on Blu-ray. It was also great that they recounted the experiences of people of various backgrounds. Theyre all excellent, particularly Rob Lowe, whose vocal gravitas delivers emotional weight to his voiceover work. This is most evident as he discusses the mass suicides of Japanese civilians at Saipan. A fascinating, entertaining and extremely well made series that comes highly recommended. The quality of the sound more than makes up for the shortcomings of the picture quality....

Solomon Kane DVD review

Just how good is Michael J. Bassetts Solomon Kane? Yet, there it is afterwards in print, for the whole world to see. Sometimes I seem to develop an affinity for actors before Ive even seen them in that much on screen. (Id prefer not to mentionDaylightorG.I. He didnt get the role that time around, but Im still hopeful for the future. InKanehe is every bit the grizzled hero, managing to embody the vicious and the heroic in equal measure....

Chloe Blu-ray review

Just refer back to how she quietly stoleJennifers Bodyfrom under the feet of Megan Fox last year, too. But then theresChloe, the new film from Atom Egoyan, in which she takes the title role. Its a three-hander at heart, with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moores married couple at the heart of it. Chloes job is to see if she can seduce David, and to report back to Catherine. And predictably, it doesnt all go to plan....

The growing tidal wave of South Korean cinema

The same kind of dynamic works withTidal Wave. You end up hoping the best for them, because you get invested in the characters. The family story actually makes the tidal wave part seem like a subplot, because its so richly told. Deep, theoretical thinking in an action film? Yes, it can happen. Its just what we do best, I suppose. When people hear vampire couple, they immediately think ofTwilight, but this is different....

Green Zone DVD review

Director Paul Greengrass fuses the action of his Bourne films with thought-provoking drama in Green Zone. Nevertheless,Green Zonewraps up a thought-provoking examination of Iraqs occupation inside a taut, kinetically-charged thriller. Film: Green Zoneis out now andavailable from the Den Of Geek Store. Spider-Man 5000 Volume 1 DVD review

Originally aired in 1981, can the Spider-Man animated series still entertain in the 21st century? Nick swings in to find out… In fact, the 5000 refers to an episode numbering system, not a time period. This 1981 animated series is set straight after the 60sSpider-Manshow, with Peter Parker now attending Empire State University. The series does a great job of capturing the ethos of the comic book. Peter Parker is a teenager juggling his love life with work and webswinging....

The King’s Bastard book review

This time I can follow and enjoy the unfolding story without that stale someones been here before feeling. King Rolen, the one person with the power to control Illien, is apparently already under his spell. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was exciting, daring and silly in all the right proportions. Evil people are evil and good people are gut wrenchingly, vomit inducingly good. Its a story of kings and queens, beasts and warriors, magic and religion....

Peter Sluszka interview: Youth In Revolt

First I was given the script with notations for where Miguel Arteta and Michael Cera wanted animated sequences. Then I presented proposals on how to approach each segment. They shot the live action first and we matched the camera move with motion control on our fabricated set....

Inception review

Christopher Nolan follows up the huge success of The Dark Knight with the mind-bending and hugely ambitious Inception. But is it any good? Its not even a real word, he added. I looked it up in the dictionary. Its like reboot its made up. Nolans status as one of Hollywoods most preeminent directors has also allowed him to assemble an extraordinary stellar cast. And Tom Hardy provides rare sparkles of comedy as Eames, a smooth-talking master of disguise....

Top 10 strong female science-fiction film characters

Who are the finest female characters in science fiction movies? For here we present women with fleshed-out characteristics. With balls of steel. Thrown in to aid the portrayal of the male lead, or to offer light sexual relief. Theyre much more likely to show women in some compromising positions involving tits/ass/gore/blood/mutants/screaming. The gang leader, Rox, not only wins for best 80s hairdo, shes also a lesbian. Certainly not tough, foul-mouthed, undead-fighting, biker lesbians thrashing zombies with chainsaws in true b-movie slasher style....

Predators review

Predator was a sci-fi cinema classic. So after the tedious AvP movies, can the franchise regain its teeth with NimrA3d Antal’s Predators? As aPredatorfan, I only have memories of the classic 1987 original to cling onto. Im in a holding pen now, deep in the bowels of a Central London cinema. Predators is mere minutes away, and still the tension mounts. Can they possibly deliver the sequel toPredatorits fans truly deserve?...
