Warren Ellis interview: RED, RED 2, Jonah Hex, Gravel, screenwriting and more

And, thankfully, even the emotional trauma was minimal. Oh, yes, Im basically a shadow of my former self right now. Im going to just swear incoherently at you for fifteen minutes and call it a day. So, now the dust has settled, how was theREDexperience? Yeah, quite deliberately. It was my choice. They bought the right to adapt it. It must have been quite a surprise, then. Because it did well....

Do we need a remake of Zelda: The Ocarina Of Time?

Dogs can live without food, cant they? Ill let you know in April. Those of advanced enough years will remember the almost unbearable levels of hype that preceded the original Z-Day. The rest, as some fools say, is history. That palpable sense of wonder upon entering Hyrule Field for the first time (a Where were you? Appreciation of the past is good. But so is progress.

Gnomeo & Juliet review

Im not particularly familiar with this Bieber character, so to rant about him would be remiss. Especially when theres a more enjoyable pop star project in 3D screens right now. As high concepts go, they dont get much higher. The gnomes in 2Bs garden wear blue hats and the garden ornaments at Not 2B wear red hats. The neighbours who live in 2B and Not 2B (geddit?) feud with one another, and so do their garden ornaments, in a war for horticultural supremacy....

Test Drive Unlimited 2 PlayStation 3 review

It’s ambitious and sprawling, offering an entire island to explore in exotic cars. But is Test Drive Unlimited 2 any good? Here’s Ryan’s review… Never has a videogame provoked such foul-mouthed ranting from your humble reviewer. Simple, you might think. Unlimited 2s visual improvements over its predecessor are immediately in evidence. Like its predecessor, the minutiae of car ownership has been faithfully replicated. The only thing you cant do, Im sad to report, is kick the tyres....

10 things Star Wars has taught me about running a fascist dictatorship

Thinking of taking over the universe? The Galactic Empire is shown to be a practically unstoppable force that is run with military precision. double-check you protect your Achilles heel. It probably wouldnt break the bank to install particle shielding as well, just as a precaution. Yknow, on the off chance that a tin-pot little fighter can get past those impenetrable defences? Buried DVD review

Rodrigo Cortes economical, terrifying Buried arrives on DVD, but how does it fare on the small screen? Heres Ryans review… Youve got to admire the decision to releaseBuriedon Valentines Day. In a nutshell, thats all there is to the plot. Beneath Graus lens, the sand that seeps into the coffin looks like little hillocks and dunes. Its this obsessive attention to detail that makes an apparently unfilmable premise so fascinating to watch....

Doctor Who: The Ark DVD review

A 1966 Doctor Who story is plucked out of the archive for a new DVD release. Heres James review of The Ark… By 1966,Doctor Whowas a show very much in transition. To be blunt, hardly at all. Guardians Of The Phoenix book review

Prolific sci-fi author Eric Brown’s novel is a post-apocalyptic epic set in a ruined Europe. Guardians Of The Phoenixsees Brown adapt a previously written short story into a full-sized novel. The story begins, as so many often do, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Ho hum, indeed. None of this is the most original setup for a sci-fi yarn, Im sure youll agree. It is in its characters, however, whereGuardians Of The Phoenixfalters....

Never Let Me Go review

Mark Romaneks quietly beautiful adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguros novel, Never Let Me Go, arrives in UK cinemas. Ryan tries his best to fight back the tears… Quite why scientists would provide such an expensive location for its legion of organ donors is never explained. Isnt this like keeping cattle in a health spa, only to turn them into beef burgers? Presumably, these are corn-fed, free-range, organic clones for BUPA patients....

The forgotten films of James Franco

James Francos performance in 127 Hours was rightly praised, but what of his earlier, less prominent roles? He will soon be seen inYour Highness(Handle your shit, Fabius, kindly.) andRise Of The Apes, all while finishing a PhD in English Literature at Yale. Clearly, his star wattage is at its zenith, but it wasnt always so. Ad content continues below Now, there is a pattern I have noticed with certain actors....

Music in the movies: Carter Burwell

The score is understated and simple, utilising a piano motif that carries much of the piece. If all that wasnt enough, it features some damn fine yodelling. Burwells score accentuates said effects, particularly through the violin work accompanying the mosquito effects. His original compositions are supplemented by Russian composer Aram Khachaturians work from hisSpartacusballet. But they also convey the sparseness of the Minnesota landscape. His compositions have a strong sense of fun and whimsy with occasional dark and dramatic undertones....

Nemesis review

Mark Millars violent comic Nemesis makes its hardcover debut. Ad content continues below Its hardly surprising that Tony Scott is interested in adaptingNemesisfor the big screen. Dynamic though Millars storytelling is, the characters inNemesisare barely given time to breathe beneath the explosions and bloodshed. There are signs, however, that Morrows rather flat depiction may be intentional. Much of his dialogue is hilariously pompous. This collected, hardcover version ofNemesismay also be the perfect way to read it....

Amer DVD review

Ever get the feeling youve been lied to? Hungry and excited, I accepted his offer and followed his lead down a dark, shadowy walkway. I waited for three hours before I had to accept that the Opal Fruits were not coming. I had been tricked. When I sat down to watch giallo-inspired French thriller,Amer, I had a similar feeling. I had been tricked again! Ad content continues below Ameris a film made up of three individual segments....
