Music in the movies: James Newton Howard

Its another score that far surpasses the quality of the film, althoughThe Devils Advocateis by no means terrible. Its by no means a masterpiece, but its highly enjoyable if viewed in the right spirit. King Kong I really wasnt a huge fan of Peter Jacksons take onKing Kong. This is a film that has been givensome respecton this site recently, and quite rightly so.

Super 8 review

Of course, their craft is low-rent zombie detective movies, but you have to start somewhere, right? For those who dont remember, Tobe Hooper directedPoltergeistfrom a Spielberg script, with Spielberg producing as well. The Directors Guild of America says that there was no evidence for a co-director credit for Spielberg.) Theres an emotional core here. As for the script, also by Abrams, there are a few flaws. When I mention adventure, I mean adventure....

Looking back at Le Mans

Racings important to men who do it well. When youre racing, it… its life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting. In 1971,Le Mansended up being that movie. But the race was always the primary focus, and the narrative was very much secondary. In fact, it takes just under forty minutes for any of the leads to utter any dialogue. Before that, the only dialogue is delivered via announcers....

The origins of Green Lantern

For the dark things cannot stand the light, The light of the Green Lantern! and became the Green Lantern, fighting evil wherever it reared its ugly head. First out of the gate was a rather radical overhaul of the 1940s super-speed character,The Flash. Riffing heavily on E.E. A literal wishing ring, these weapons of seemingly unlimited potential had two major flaws. The second, and perhaps more fatal flaw, was the rings susceptibility to the colour yellow....

The Flaw review

Britain and Iceland are mentioned in passing. However, those looking for a more global picture may be left somewhat disappointed. Its certainly an assured documentary that is executed exceptionally well. Just, possibly, not on the big screen. Rating: 4 out of 5

Sanctum DVD review

Action adventure movie Sanctum arrives on DVD. Without the spectacle of 3D, is there much left to enjoy? Heres a review… Sanctumhas but one pertinent message to impart: dont trust nature. Unfortunately, the hapless protagonists ofSanctumhave no such luxury. Or its an Antipodean, adult version ofThe Goonies. As one character growls, Theres no God down here! Neither is there a scriptwriter in the cave, if the woeful dialogues anything to go by....

In a year thats given us a couple of surprise animated hits, perhapsGnomeo & Julietis the least likely. To mark that fact, we got the chance to chat with its director, Kelly Asbury. Is that one of the ramifications you were looking for? I always hoped that in some way any movie I work on brings something new to everyones life. Last Night review

Its main similarity toFirst Classthen, is that I very much saw it as a film of two halves. At least, in this case, the divide is integral. Films likeThe Touristconstruct sexual chemistry between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie by virtue of their beauty. Depps beautiful, Jolies beautiful, ergo they should be together. Knightley and Worthington are not so ridiculously beautiful together as that pairing. As mentioned, however, we stick with Joanna for the most part of the divergent story....

Movie titles: the rise of the infernal colon

Numbered sequels are out of fashion, and titles are getting longer and more ungainly as a result. Since that article was written, however, the practice has become more common than ever. In the instances above, weve got a title and then what are effectively two subtitles. In fairness, some subtitled films provide some quite useful information. Right now, the trend among movie titles feels like following a similar phenomenon in the automotive industry....

Music in the movies: June score round-up

Hans Zimmers score forPirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesis available now through Disney. Here, less is indeed more. Still, its not a score without its faults, and there are times where it doesnt quite work. Basement Jaxx and Steven Prices score forAttack The Blockis available now through Decca. Overall, it was a little too cool for school for my liking. Its something that French duo Daft Punk failed to do withTron: Legacylast year....

Asif Kapadia interview: on directing Senna

Ad content continues below Well, Im a sport fan. So, I have always watched everything, and I used to watch racing. Formula One was always on. The genius about it is that its on at lunchtime on a Sunday. So, I remember the Senna-Prost rivalry. I wasnt the biggest Senna fan, although I remember liking McLaren at the time. They dont know how it ends. Theyre talking in the past tense....

The Mechanic Blu-ray review

The mighty Jason Statham stars in this violent remake of the 70s Charles Bronson movie, The Mechanic. But I have no doubt that its an ability he actually possesses. The stunts and action are refreshingly grounded and free from the lazy clutches of CGI and noticeably so. Elsewhere, Tony Goldwyn provides the obligatory (if you live in our home) He did it! chorus, as a man who may, or may not, be entirely trustworthy....

But then I actually watched it, and I quite enjoyed myself. Its funny, entertaining, and seemingly has zero morals. And that, folks, is pretty much it.
