In Time review

Can Andrew Niccol match the brilliance of Gattaca with his new sci-fi film, In Time? Niccol presents a future where time, not money, is currency. Hamilton is a time-wealthy centarian, with a further century still remaining on his clock. The mentally weary Hamilton has had enough of living, and longs for the solace of death. The casting of Timberlake, however, is perhaps one of the films missteps. Rating: 3 out of 5

The Beaver DVD review

A film largely ignored at the box-office, can Jodie Fosters drama The Beaver find an audience on DVD? Underneath all the seen-it-all-before visual style,The Beaveris quite a charming film, admittedly. However, Jodie Foster has played it straight down the middle its more like a drama with some laughs. Foster has done a sterling job of juggling direction and a supporting role as Walters long-suffering wife, Meredith. A lot of the appeal is the life-imitating-art car crash that is Mel Gibson....

The Catwoman controversy: sexism in Batman: Arkham City?

While Arkham Citys been praised, its portrayal of Catwoman has provoked controversy, too. Ad content continues below Yet the complaints go deeper than this, and appear to have hit a nerve. So why include such potential sexism is the first place? This represents an increase of two per cent in the previous year alone. (Source: The Entertainment Software Association theesa.com.) Puss In Boots review

Puss In Boots gets a spin-off movie from the Shrek franchise. But can it deliver the goods? However, theres one prize that has eluded him for half of his life: magic beans. As it turns out, those magic beans arent legend, but fact. Pixar knows emotion, pathos, story-telling. DreamWorks, by and large, knows spectacle, andPuss In Bootsis definitely a spectacle. Puss and Kitty whirl and swashbuckle their way through many gorgeous scenes....

The Rum Diary review

After all, editor in chief E.J. Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) is one of those people. Sanderson sees Kemp, with his writing skill and lack of connections, as an asset. The Rum Diaryis a bit rambling and aimless, which makes it exactly like the source novel. In a way, it makes sense. Its a bit like two movies in one, and I preferred the one with Moburg and Sala. Part of the reason for this preference is that Giovanni Ribisi steals every scene hes in....

The Messenger Blu-ray review

A directorial debut from screenwriter Oren Moverman, drama The Messenger features some exceptionally strong performances. Heres Glens Blu-ray review… The reactions of the next of kin are all very different, but the grief is always clear. Looking back at Kevin Costner’s The Postman

Kevin Costner’s epic adventure The Postman was released in 1997 to a mixed reception. Here, Michael Reed argues that still it has a lot going for it… you’ve got the option to summarise reviewers negative assessment in one word: overindulgence. However, a more detailed evaluation makes sense of the situation. Firstly, despite its notoriety,Waterworldwasnt actually a financial disaster. Secondly, Costner was still on a career high at that point. In addition, he was still mainly known as KevinDances With WolvesCostner, the Oscar-winning director....

Miss Bala review

A would-be beauty queen finds herself embroiled in a violent gang war in director Gerardo Naranjos Miss Bala. Imagine a dystopian city where nobody can be trusted. Where war perpetually rages, as law and order teeters on collapse. The script, by contrast, is so minimal to almost be nonexistent. All the other characters in the film are resolutely two-dimensional. This is great as an over-arching message, but a little disatisfying from a dramatic standpoint....

Paranormal Activity 3 review

Can found-footage horror Paranormal Activity 3 find new ways to scare its audience? Ad content continues below Many of these are absurdly simple. This third film in the series is, for my money, the scariest yet. Its 80s setting also allows its makers to put a Teddy Ruxpin toy to incidental yet exceptionally eerie use. I always knew those horrible dolls couldnt be trusted. Rating: 4 out of 5

We Need To Talk About Kevin review

Here’s our review. We Need To Talk About Kevin. Its an odd name, really, but that didnt stop Lionel Shrivers novel from becoming a bestseller. Instead, the film offers a startling portrayal of motherhood, played with extreme vulnerability by Swinton. Kevins character, too, is pitched just shy of caricature. you oughta see it. Then we can talk aboutWe Need To Talk About Kevin. Rating: 4 out of 5
