What We Do in the Shadows/Da Sweet Blood of Jesus Review

Two new films take different approaches to the good old vampire. We examine both What We Do in the Shadows and Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. Along with the zombie, the vampire may well be the most exhausted horror archetype around these days. It is hurt, however, by some very broad and stiff acting from the entire cast. Abrahams has a better grasp of what shes doing, but Williams doesnt seem sure of himself....

Arrow: Canaries review

Here’s Mike’s review. Well, this was a different kind ofArrowepisode, wasnt it? I believe Ive used this word infrequently to describe this show, but tonights was a mature episode. A lot got accomplished in this one. Thea learned the truth about her brother. Laurel stopped being such a lying liar and told dear old Dad that Sara is worm food. Malcolm Merlyn wormed his way deeper into the lives of the Queens (and into our hearts)....

Is straight-to-streaming the way forward for TV imports?

Better Call Saul and Constantine have both dodged traditional UK channels in favour of online streaming services. Is a trend on the way? Theres no denying that Netflix is becoming a behemoth of the entertainment world. Could this set a precedent then, we wonder? We mull it over… That is, unless you fancied waiting months for a DVD release. Until 2006, I was an avid watcher of the show. However, my household didnt have Sky at the time....

Matthew Vaughn: Mastering (and Subverting) One Genre at a Time

For that matter, I sometimes wonder if Vaughn and his constant co-screenwriter Jane Goldman know either. There is an idiom about being a Jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. As of now, Vaughn seems determined to disprove that one admiring genre jeer at a time. As XXXXs voiceover states, if you were so clever, youd know his name. Moments later, its moot when it turns out he wasnt quite that smart either....

Supernatural: Halt & Catch Fire, Review

The newest episode of I Know What You Did Last Summer… I mean, Supernatural, showed us the power of Wifi and true love. In the movie, they hide the body, but in the episode the teens simply leave the scene. Theres also a Julie in both. Intentional homage or whoops that was done before…. you get to decide. Then again, with each advance in technology, we always see a scifi/horror complement....

The Americans: Open House Review

Last summer, I had a filling placed in one of my molars. I thought something was horribly wrong. The pain was shockingly strong and damn near Biblical. It felt like I was being cosmically punished for everything I had ever done wrong. Surely, there was an infection. I needed a root canal or an exorcism. But all that was wrong was that stupid bite. So when Elizabeth broke her teeth inThe Americansseason 3 premiere, I felt her pain....

Do videogame review scores matter?

From one standpoint, it might not seem like much of a big deal. Then again, ratings have been a major part of the videogame landscape almost from the beginning. Theres long been a sense of drama and entertainment to scoring games, too. Its like a penalty shoot-out, or a high-stakes gamble at a roulette wheel. As a reader, its hard not to be entranced by the drama of it all....
