Z Nation: White Light Review

Z Nation keeps finding ways to distinguish itself from the pack. Here’s our review… In the words of any kid who thought they were cool circa 1997: Dag, son. Remember all that meticulous set up in episode one? Where we thought we were seeing the arc of the season laid out for us? You know, bounty hunters chasing the gang along with zombies? Mack and Addy reconnecting? Murphy creating his own zombie army?...

Destiny: The Taken King Review

The Kings Fall Raid, which I hadnt done by press time, opened on Sept. 18. Quests stack and chain together, so that completing one mission for any particular character unlocks another. Its a bit like the several steps required for Exotic Weapon Bounties in Year 1. Each Quest has a dedicated, guaranteed reward, so there are fewer instances of engram roulette. Ad content continues below The mechanics of the gunplay havent changed....

Power Rangers Dino Charge: Knight After Knights Review

While it mostly delivers, I feel as though it comes up a bit short. It starts slowly with Sledge punishing Fury and sending a monster down to Earth. How about, you know, give some more focus to Curio and Poisandra? In fact, this scene and the whole first fight really didnt do much for this installment. But it takes away from the real star of the episode: Ivan. I just wish we had gotten to see more of this little band and how he recruited them all....

Was Whitey Bulger a Rat or a Programmed Patsy?

The FBI was choosing sides in a gang war, taking a tip from the CIA. Its the American way. Black Massmentioned once that Bulger was given LSD 50 times by the CIA while he was in prison. My first reaction was to mutter lucky motherfucker under my breath. He was used to take out crime in South Boston. There was a time when the south of Boston conjured images of Prince Spaghetti day....

Baltasar Kormákur interview: directing Everest

The film is directed by Baltasar Kormakur, who previously gave us the hugely enjoyable2 Guns. Shortly after that happened, we had the documentary,Everest, which was directed by David Breashears. First of all, to be able to create the mountain, we need quite a budget. Im not saying they didnt get shots of the mountain, but thats a different, documentary style. The other thing is that we had the opportunity which I dont think anyone else had....

Dominion: Bewilderment of the Heart Review

Dominion dives headlong into its characters ugliest truths and deepest fears and desires. Spoilers ahead for last nights episode of Dominion. ThatDominionhas such a sprawling cast is both a blessing and a curse. Having such a talented ensemble at ones disposal affords multiple dramatically different viewpoints of the post-apocalypse. In essence, said Darkness manifests nightmares and dreams in humans and angels alike, with fatal results. Except Alex seems immune to its ill effects even as chaos erupts all around him....

Sicario Review

Emily Blunt ventures into the nightmarish world of drug smuggling along the Mexican border. And thats whereSicariobegins to fall apart. to her unsavory comrades. Even in a movie about shadow operatives, it’s possible for you to only have so many ciphers. Despite its flaws, however, there is much to recommend inSicarioif you have the stomach for it. The 11-time Oscar nominee (when is this guy gonna get his trophy already?)...

Black Mass Review

Johnny Depp is good inBlack Mass. The rest would then be left for the rodents in a soiled fruit cellar. He ran the rackets in gambling, prostitution, loan sharking, and the more than occasional murder. He even introduced dope to his childhood neighborhood of Southie. Hows that for hometown pride? These things tend to happen when youre giving up all your competition to the Feds. Guess what happens to them....

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Review

The sequel to last years surprisingly effective YA hit cant quite find its way. Read our review… One of last years bigger sci-fi surprises wasThe Maze Runner. It was gripping entertaining. a solar flare that destroyed civilization. Even when one of the group betrays the others later on, we really dont understand why. In fact, theres little to understand inThe Scorch Trials. The world outside the Maze just seems thrown together from pieces of other franchises....

South Park: Stunning and Brave Review

For the first time in 19 seasons, South Park is politically correct. Here’s our season premiere review… But its not my job to assess that, its Matt Stone and Trey Parkers. Ironically, they made their big statement on political correctness in the most politically correct way possible. Out with Principal Victoria and in PC Principal ushers in a new era at South Park Elementary. The Gamechangers & Why We Need a Good Film About Game Design

BBCs The Gamechangers didnt exactly do its GTA subject matter justice. In the very next scene, the game engines finished and demonstrated to Jamie, another Rockstar co-founder. As a result, the games industry has its own history, its own stories to tell. Like empires, studio and publishers have sprung up, grown to huge size and vanished without trace. Take, as an early example, the story of a British outfit from the 1980s: Imagine Software....
